And withdrew some BL! 20210101_115643.jpg 20210102_105732.jpg
Was waiting to take this down. Couldnt stand looking at it from my tree stand any longer. Also bucked a couple other down BL and a small black cherry that I got too just in time and was in the way. I have a bunch of standing dead or blow over BL in the bank. Time to put them to use. 20210102_153915.jpg
End result of today's withdraw. Bunch of nice limb wood too that's just the right size.

Nice that the bark was falling off. I wish I had a wider availability of it. But, no complaints.

Come to Connecticut! We have plenty! So much so that just today I stacked a face cord of spruce on a couple of Black Locust sleepers :)

I haven’t burnt a lot of BL but I got into some last winter. It was like your pic of bark falling off. Hard to say how long that tree has been dead, what I cut like that was down to 16-17% in one year. It’s good stuff.

Cool! I just happened to finish cutting more black locust not an hour ago here at my brother's place; we found another deadfall. Looked similar to what you have. Been burning it in his insert last few days from this week's bounty... one day deadfall, next day in the fireplace! Burns great. Cheers!

There's a bunch more standing dead like that. Some birds and critters have made a few their home, so I'll let them be. Nothing overly big, 12-14" diameter at the base are the biggest probably. I do have 3 bigger BL blow downs that I'm going to withdraw from the bank sooner than later because they're not elevated. Bark not even close to coming off.

Missed this yesterday! Great stuff there Biddleman  Im really starting to appreciate BL for its ability to stay and not rot. I have some "in the bank" and its nice not to have to rush to GIBIR
Get It Before It Rots. An acronym ive seen on here before.
Most of the dead stuff ive found is the same size. Once blocked of sunlight they die off has been my observation.
Knock any bark off them and leave to get washed off. Ive done this a couple times.

Split it up and stacked it. Took MM and tested different splits. Sorry for upside down pics. 20210103_094024.jpg
    15 - 17 seemed average
    20210103_095202.jpg highest reading I had.

Nice. I have some locust; I think it is honey locust, that are dead and I need to retrieve from the bank. Insects will eventually eat it; I cut one and part of it at the base had some really black loam inside from the bugs eating it hollow.

Is there a locust guide for telling what locust from the bark and colour of the wood?

Good observation Brad about why they died as I have wondered about that; that makes sense. As for knocking bark off and leave to get washed off, what do you mean by that? You mean a tree in the woods or splits/logs you have scrounged? And wash what off? Or heck, do you mean go home and take a shower, lol?

I have never burned locust. I knew it was a tree but didn’t really know it was around here. After seeing pics here I have noticed a few black locust trees around historical homes in town. What is it about locust that makes is so desirable?

It is a dense wood with high btus. I was cutting some and saw a spark and thought I might have hit something. Someone told me on here that it is the nature of the wood. Some locust does spark a lot while burning.

This and on my property vines have been strangling the trees and pulling them down. Vines are out of control and killing the woods. I've been cutting them at the bases and trying to free up the trees. Some are 6" diameter at the base.
When I felled the blow over it actually got hung up in vines and was hanging 4' off the ground. I had to cut them to get it down.
