Acer that is... it might not be that old as these grow pretty quick. It is right across the street from me. They were talking about renting a splitter, but I could really use the exercise with this covid 19 (pounds) going around (my mid section). Anyways I was swinging the fiskars in the rain and mud, just for a spell:
I have a friendly rapport with the neighbors and he has told me to help myself. It is cut to variable lengths and some of it is just going to be hard to split. My idea is I’ll split what I can on my own time and leave the longer lengths for them for their fire pit. I’ve given them a wheel barrow full of cherry splits a few times and they have send over a plate or two of fine carne asada. Actually, right after I joined FHC he lent me his 18” stihl for some dead standing cherries when my hand saw was clearly not hacking it, so he has fostered/sponsored my FHC status. I have fixed his saw up for him a couple times since (I got my own 16” for free off of the neighborhood list serve). He’ll ask me to replace the chain for him, and I’m like, “you do know you can sharpen these, right?” I’ve sharpened it up for him a few times now. His company does masonry and rebricked my chimney this past fall. He has a snow plow on his truck and no doubt uses the saw for some odd jobs that come around. Super nice guy and family. It was pretty muddy splitting the wood in their yard today as I think the tree shaded out the grass. Most of the branches got chipped and it’s too bad they didn’t redistribute the chips around the yard when the arborists were done. I’m just about done burning a cord + of Norwegian maple for this season and I might as well replace the empty stack with the red maple. Should be good to go by next fall if I get it put up soon.
Wood for good carne asada?!?! Sounds like a match made in heaven. How close to Gettysburg are you? LOL!
This is another potential project.. no permission secured yet, near my sister's house.. does that look like white oak?
Yes, “rapport” not “report”.. too late to edit or I’d fix that for you. I’d blame auto correct, but that was really all me.
I’ll take care of it, as it caught my eye... and you might know that if I was the one to say something old yooperdave would fly some silly meme or smiley............. Dave?
I was making some hay after sun wasn’t shining this evening. I am replacing the Norwegian maple stack, that is sadly, now, ash. Now I am going to season the Ruberum with some old bay. None of that contemporary bay around my house. Hey anyone know a good way to highlight the rings in the stump? The neighbor was asking how old I thought the tree was. My guess is around 75 years, due to the size, and because ruberum seem to grow pretty quick. I t to Ed counting but couldn’t really distinguish the rings in the light colored wood.
Well this red maple looks to be about my only score this winter.. too bad it is cut to wonky lengths. The pool where I was getting locust has twice rescinded on letting me collect there. The guy who is collecting has been pretty anti-social. I invited him here after he said that the locust was not burning real well.. fresh split and wet. But he has never replied to my friendly emails or offers to divvy up some other wood scores in the neighborhood. My family is wrapping up a round of covid. I got the worst of it as the oldest.. the kids didn’t even notice. I had a fever for a week straight.. no flu has ever done that to me. And the lingering non-productive cough is annoying. I never thought I would wish to hack up some globs of stuff, but it would feel more, well, productive. Like my body was making progress on processing it. I think we picked it up on a masked trip to target.. so stay safe out there.
By brother in law hoards bikes the way we hoard fire wood. I have a circa 2000 trek mountain bike that I sport as well. Great for pulling the kids around in a trailer.
I picked a couple loads of these from another neighbor. I may need to cut some down to 16”. any idea what type of tree: the neighbor said he thought it was oak. I don’t know what it is, but it is not oak.
