Had to make a recycling run today and that meant stopping by the compost area to check for wood. It had rained and they were grinding so slim pickings. A load came in while i was there but mystery wood i think was box elder (see separate thread). Grabbed some Eastern red cedar (juniper) logs to make kindling. IMG_3684.JPG IMG_3685.JPG IMG_3687.JPG May save this one and make some cookies. IMG_3688.JPG Split a couple when i got home before dusk. Not used to making this many splits from one log. I love the dump! It's like a gold mine of stuff!

And I love me some juniper too. Very nice kindling production btw. Must have smelled amazing.

The one looks like a 3 leaf clover. Make a cookie out of it and then paint the white part green with a red center, might look kinda cool.

Very faint at the dump but the splits yes. I filled an empty box with the splits and put it in the laundry room next to the furnace. Im wondering if it will smell like cedar soon?
I was trying to take the knot free rounds. Have to buck to correct length too. I may tinker tomorrow.

I wont split that one up and will cookie it. Just wondering what would be a good thickness?

Just went downstairs to put laundry in the hamper and got halfway down the stairs and could smell the cedar. Maybe ill put a bag of kindling in every room down there. We live in a raised ranch and the lower level just used for storage.

That looks like Purple heart! That's pretty exotic wood, but I don't think its around here. Purple heart is great for carving and other woodwork. Not sure of the BTU's though.

I thought Box elder only had a red streak running through it.

Just about spit my coffee when I read the title of this thread! It reminded me of a joke someone had told decades.

A boy and girl were parking and he asked her what she wanted. She whispered "Kiss me where it stinks". He started the car and drove to the town dump.

I love red cedar. It can get tough to split when you get to the branches though

I've messed with a bunch of cedar and you don't want to cut it to thin, it will crack on you. I have some night stands made from some that are 2&1/2 inches thick and they are 12 years old, no cracks or checking.

Nice find Brad! Amazing what people drop there. I've seen some pretty decent piles of good hardwood there a few years back.

Ha!, I had to read it twice as well. I'm happy to see someone else has a dark side.

You want kindling? How many trailers of pine logs you want me to drop off? :)

Not sure. It gets to be a tangled mess when the huge payloader scoops and pushes it up into the pile. There were some massive logs on that side.
