Barcroftb & I took this Elm down for my office manager about a month or so ago, finally got back to cut it up. I assumed the tree was gonna be punky due to the condition of some of the limb wood. Boy was I wrong. Two cord & it was HEAVY!
IMG_20201231_101911596_HDR1.jpg The leaders were solid. About now was when I was wishing we'd brought the loader.
IMG_20201231_102116011_HDR1.jpg IMG_20201231_102116011_HDR1.jpg I cut & noodled for about 3 hours straight. Ken loaded & Pam moved the rounds into place. The base was 40" & forgot to take a pic.

Yes sir! The hinge snapped on Brad & we just assumed the tree was gonna be punky. It died of DED a few years ago. I was gonna clean it up for her just to help out, now I'm glad I got on it.

Yep LOL, bit sore & tired, but well worth the effort!
Yes, my boiler & Ken's. We split work & spoils 50/50. I put 4 tanks thru my 064, dulled the chain & 3 tanks thru the 660, so my back & arms are well aware that I worked today.:dex:

Nothing like noodling with a nice sharp chain. Good workout for the saw. I love the trunk wood from a big tree like that! So dense! Looks like some long burn times in your future!

No, just small enough to load by hand. If you look you'll see the splitter log lift in the one pic. Gotta bust em down & stack yet. I dumped them as close to the splitter as possible.
Once that's dry I'll get 12hr burns out of a 1/2 load in the boiler easily.

AC, doing that job, curious, did you sharpen your chain or more than once? Looks like great wood, hope it splits ok.

No chain sharpening on the job yesterday. I had 5 saws with me. MS 660 with a 36" bar, 064 running a 32" 036 with 20" & 026 16" also the Milwaukee to mark with. I ran the 064 for most of the job till I stuck the bar tip in the dirt . Just switched to the 660 to finish the job. Used the smaller saws for the leaders & then went big. I'm cleaning & sharpening up the saws today getting ready for the next outing. Takes an hour or so to blow them all clean & sharpen the chains. Much easier to do in a heated shop.

Nope, all one big Siberian Elm. Some was pretty red on the inside though, I see what you're referring to.

Looks like a good day! Couple more like that, you may need to reconsider the "Amateur" moniker...;)

Ha! I've done dozens if not hundreds of those big b@$stards. The Amateur moniker is cause I can never seem to charge enough to make it a "real" job. :D
