Oh yes. I started trimming some rounds to length this morning on the black locust load I got yesterday.....only to get a call that he had a load of red maple and cherry......and I said YES PLEASE. I then proceeded to hump it and move as much as I could towards the top of the driveway to make to for the 2nd load. Just finished shoveling the sawdust when he showed up!!! I looooooove the smell of fresh cut cherry!!! Before: And after: This will keep me busy....for two weeks. Hahahahahaha. Happy holidays everyone! Christmas came a few days early for me!
Just finished cutting up some cookies and cleaning up a bit. I feel like I have 5 lbs of sawdust........inside my shirt......so off to the shower! I will probably be giving away half of it since I am seriously running out of room. The only other place I can make maybe 3 stacks is near my terrible neighbor and it's the furthest from the driveway as well so it will be a hike to drag a cartful at a time.
Thanks! I don't know what I did to deserve this.....but I'm super grateful. I absolutely love the smell of cherry when you chainsaw it. I could get high sniffing those chips!
I suggest you go taller with the holz hausens. I can bring a ladder over. Plenty of room up there. Some nice wood there LOTF! I say less than two weeks work the way you go at it!
I initially did make them about 7-8' tall........but for some reason the code inspector said they had to be 6' and under.......So I complied. No biggie, that just means more of 'em! In hindsight it probably is a good thing they are 6' because flipping the tarps over to access the wood is already a little challenging at 6'. Also, one of the cons of a holz hausen is that when you do start taking wood from it it will collapse if you are not careful in how you remove the wood. You can't just start at one spot and just take it all the way down to the pallets or else the whole thing will collapse. Most of my older piles do have oddballs, shorties, uglies, and knotties in the center so that makes it more challenging....The newer piles that have splits I would have normally used on the ring are now also in the center.....so that makes it easier to keep the whole thing intact. I can take from the center freely whereas the current stack I'm taking the "pretty" pieces first. Heh heh.
It goes a lot quicker when you have neighbors that take away the rounds I don't like and leave me the ez-pz ones!!!!
How was the wind and rain there last night? Some SERIOUS wind here, but surprisingly no power lost. Rain came in before midnight.
The wind was pretty good. Woke up and saw two tarps blown off even though weighted down with splits and eye hooks...... Also saw two of my IBC tote covers blown right off. No power loss for us. Out here splitting some of the black locust. Wood love.
Same here. Just her and i today and instead of taking a nap, i took a walk into the woods to check for any storm damage as i have no wood on hand to split. Rain just ended. Found a big oak snapped off at the base of the trunk. Medium basswood down as collateral damage. Not too far down and 100' off trail. Ill CSS the oak there and pull next year. Basswood ill get out right away. Havent wheelbarrowed wood out of there since last Winter. Have about a cord of ash stacked just below the trailhead with a tarp over it. CSS last January. Trail goes for 1/4+mile to powerlines.
