I mostly can’t ID where I got the wood anymore. However, I can tell when scrounging was rough because the wood is all different lengths and thinner split. I had a permit to cut in state forest this year. That wood C/S/S looks like a post card. The older stuff from scrounging at the dump back in the day, not so much.
Most of the time yes. Its a trip down memory lane. With the amount of wood i hoard and being over 50 sometimes i forget.
To all of you that remember where most of your wood came from, the real question is do you remember your wife's birthday or your anniversary without being reminded?
I remember everything, my mind is like a steel trap. Unfortunately that door is already closed so nothing can get in. I've been scrounging so little the past few years hard for me to remember where the wood came from in my stacks. So nice being ahead that I can afford to forget things like that.
Absolutely remember where each of my ranks of firewood were cut. But, I only have 2 main areas where I get most of my firewood, with an occasional scrounge at different sites.
With the amount of wood you scrounge Brad I would have trouble remembering where it all came from too. These days because I am far enough ahead I just maintain what I use and so that makes it easy. As far as that 50 thing goes you haven't seen nothing yet.
I can see logs where I made a mistake, or did some unusual work to harvest an odd piece, and I can remember the location on the property that this was done sometimes. Oddly satisfying to place a piece like that in the fireplace or smoker
I can do it because when I fill a rack, I cut a label out of an aluminum can and stamp it with the species, and month and year I finished filling that stack. A little compulsive? Maybe. But otherwise I'm going to forget what I stacked and when. This way, I burn exactly the right wood for my needs.
