Found out lastnight SIL is moving into our house. :headbang: :hair: :hair:

Just kidding! She's a good egg but pushing 80 with the onset of Dementia/Parkinsons.
The BIL passed away last month and she needs help.
We have been burning 24/7 for the last dozen years and do not miss a furnace and when i walk into her house the first thing i do is shut down her stat as she likes it boiling. We are not going to be able to be with her 100% of the time and she knows what the primary air vent does on our stove, which has me wondering?

Has anyone installed some kind of ''Lock" on the slider arm? The more i think about it the more i'm thinking of install of a new furnace and only use the woodstove when me or Mrs Loon is home.
This isnt what i want but i dont want to worry about her lighting the house up.
I'm thinking a small weld on the air opening half way would work as if she opened it to there the stove would be able to handle it fine.

    Thanks eh...Loon

That sounds like a plan. Is she physically able to load the stove? Maybe you could restrict the supply of available firewood?

I used to work assisted living when I was in High School. I had to unclog a toilet that a dementia patient stuffed full of washcloths because he thought it was flooding the room. It caused a lot of damage to his apartment and the one below it. I don't even want to get into the politics of why he was allowed to be there.
I don't know your SIL or your situation, but I think if I were you I would lock off the entire stove so that you could have the piece of mind that she won't hurt herself or anyone else.

Maybe there are some good ideas from baby proof latches on cabinets that you could fabricate for the stove door and controls? A catch of sorts. Just spit balling my opinion over here. Take it for what its worth.

Can you place some kind of a safety screen around your setup? Maybe it can be made difficult to move out of the way, for the safety for all. Nothing permanent. But something you can easily deal with.

Thanks and when a person firsts meets her nobody see's a problem 'yet' Its all at the beginning for her but she does have a few quirks that me and wife see daily.
I have to go to town today and gonna stop in at our stove supplier and see if there is anything on the market that would help us.
I cant see how i can lock the stove down Sinn?

Yeah, that's a tough one. On one hand, if she's not too bad off yet, then you certainly don't want to make her feel bad or unwelcome, but safety is important. You might go with a decorative wrought iron "fence"? I've seen those used for kids but don't necessarily look like its for kids. That might be easier to put or make a lock for without modifying your stove. I can think of a way to lock the stove down, but its not necessarily easy to do, plus I don't recall what your stove looks like.

If your stove has the plate under the stove door. Depending on clearance, you could drill a hole through it and weld a spring latch under it (like the one pictured) so the pin (when extended) is blocking the door.

Here is a quick and dirty sketch of what I mean.

She might figure it out, but it would take a bit to fiddle with it.

Thinking it would help for sure Mike plus i dont want her falling onto the stove.

One of these and i think i might cut some flatstock and install where the philips head is as she wont be able to open the air past half.
Where my thumb is is just sheet metal so wont be goofing with stove itself.;)

Ebay and amazon have guards for 80 bucks with free shipping in some cases.
I applaud you for taking care of your SIL.

Hope it goes well. My dad in his last couple of years would get cold and try to keep the house very hot. He would turn his gas stove up and have it rocking, then sometimes go and turn on the oven in the kitchen and leave the oven door wide open and have it rocking too. He got awful thin and didn't have any meat on his bones to keep him warm, I guess. He had a wood stove in one room, but we just didn't let him have any wood, but later on he was too frail to load the stove, anyway.

Doesn't that keep you from opening the air up after loading?

How about safety wire, like used in auto/motorcycle racing applications?
Here’s a pic of my rear sprocket nuts wired to keep them from coming off, just to show an example.
