So I responded to a FB marketplace post with very low expectations of decent wood. The post was pretty vague, but what the heck. Just looked like a pile of brush on the pics. Turns out it was only 5 miles from home so I load up and go check it out. As I get closer and closer to the pile I Get more and more excited! The closer I get I can start to see a lot of good logs in the pile. I get out of the truck and it gets better! Most of it it black locust! There must be 10-20 truck loads! I haven’t worked much with Locust, I’m surprised how heavy it is, and how easy it splits! I’m guessing it’s 2 year minimum drying time, so l’ll have to make separate stacks for it. Now I just have to get over there and get to work
First load out. Drive right up, cut, spit, load and go! All cut to 18” no uglies or shorts, all the branches stay right in the burn pile!
If there's such a thing as a perfect score thats it. Drive right up, cut to your specs, split on sight and leave brush. And no snow to contend with either. Three thumbs up! Looks like Santa came early for you! Go get more and post more pics!
What an awesome score, I would love to have that! Cool you split onsite. Do you think you will need to drag any logs out with your truck? Would be handy to have a winch sometimes when you get piles like that. How did you find that ad, the word "free" isn't in the ad; did it just show up on your FB feed? Or do you cruise 'plant supplies' category regularly for stuff like this?
Around a dozen years ago my buddy down the road asked if i would clear-cut the Locust in his backyard and after about 20 minutes i was a cutting. I do remember after 2 years of css the wood sizzled in the stove? Seemed nice and dry on the stack but the stove said different. Wicked burning wood when dry, thats for sure.
Good question? Did it look like you were the first there Dakota Hoarder? Ill bet everyone else had the same reaction as you when they saw the pics.
It might be handy to drag some out to get away from the brush. For now I'm just working from the outside in and removing brush as needed. I check for firewood on FB now and again, and it just popped up. I didn't respond right away because it didn't look like much, but then curiosity get the best of me.
The add is still up, but since the add is so vague and the pictures are so bad I don't think they have had any response. Probably all mine, but not sure if I will have time to get it all
pretty sure I was the first there. I'm heading back Wednesday (weather permitting) for more loads, I'll see then if anybody else has been there. I'll post some more pics then!
Are you sure that it's black locust? All the black locust I've seen has much thicker bark than that......and doesn't have a thick ring of white sapwood.... Also it's way more straight grained than what I see in the truck. It's not wavy at all unless there's a knot or something. Black locust I've seen also doesn't have the dark center at the end of the round in the first pic. And the color of the wood is pretty uniform inside the round, a dark yellowish brown. To me that bark is way too thin to be locust. Maybe the bark grows thin in SD. Here are some black locust cookies I just cut Dec-9-20. Here's some kindling I did back in Apr-2019 when my neighbor gave me some of the black locust he cut down.
