I have seen this page below for btu firewood ratings and I question pecan being higher btu than red oak and white oak. That seems wrong, what have you found? I know that pecan is pretty similar to hickory in some ways but btu surpassing oak? I do like to burn it, burns good flame. Doesn't split so well sometimes. Seems to me, once it dries, it is lighter than oak.

Not being from an area were pecan grows I never heard of pecan being used for anything other than cook/smokerwood

Ask T.Jeff Veal and Donny Price as they have experience with pecan. Never burned or cut any as its not native here. Jut recently saw my first one as it was a yard tree i couldnt ID.
Have you ever referenced the FHC chart for btu's Yawner? I respectfully disagree with some of the ratings.

Eric VW has burned lots of pecan.

Pecan is definitely hard. 41% harder than red oak.

New here. Pecan is in the hickory family and is very hard. We have plenty of it around here and try to get it when I can. Burns really good. White Oak and Post Oak are still my favorite.

Thanks for the warm welcome and a chilly hello from south-central North Carolina. Burning mostly Post Oak this evening and 32* outside right now. My burn season started about two weeks ago. Have been burning a woodstove for 25 years, but seriously for 3 years. I can tell you guys (and gals?) have fun here!

In my experience, pecan burns good, makes more ash than oak or hickory. I don't think it burns hotter than oak, but I have been wrong before, just ask my wife... :rofl: ...
I know that chart is wrong saying black walnut is hotter than oak.

Lots of pecan orchards around here but for the price you'd think they were gold/pecan orchards. $350-400 a cord and they sell out every year, 100+ cord.

Most of what's offered is limb wood, usually 4" D and smaller. Burns hot but sticks around like oak does, don't know of the BTUs though.

The smell from pecan is PHENOMENAL, hence why it's a smoking wood. I wouldn't burn it out of the holiday season, but if you can get it cheap enough, burn it!

    Yep, I did.
You got just about the last few pieces for pen blanks. It burned hot but was really quite full of fire bugs. From my wife’s point of view, she was glad when it was gone.
