FWIW, on online forums similar to this one, my overall take on it is that owners are more likely impressed than not with Stihl's m-tronic and Husky's autotune. I have seen countless posts who say something like, "I never in a million years would have thought I would go for a computer controlled saw but I have to say that this is the ticket, it just stays in tune regardless of conditions." Yes, there are issues with certain saws and even those posters admit same but they are truly impressed. Also, FWIW, it seems to me that Stihl saws are lighter than Husky. But a bit more expensive.
I think fuel injection like in the new Stihl 500i will become the standard as it did with the autos, saws will become easer to start and will use less fuel. And we see Stihl is the leader with the FI today.
What??? You didnt buy the 500i? I have no complaints about my 460 and if anything id find a NOS 461 to replace it. The 462 is Mtronic and is "only" 72cc.
I was considering the Mtronic when i bought my 261 two Summers ago and the dealer talked me out of it as too many were coming in for work from tree guys and he had to "reset the chip" if memory serves me correct. Love it and its my go to saw. Came with a 20" bar which saves the back and have had it buried in big oak without issue. Ran it a few times with a 16" bar and even better.
So you got another saw? How many is that? Remember back when we first joined and only had a couple each? We do like our saws
Just a 42cc 024. Couldnt say no for $100. Pretty clean for a 30+ year old saw. They usually bring closer to $200. Gonna run it today and see how it does.
The 462 on the right is not Mtronic, the 661 on the left is not Mtonic either, you just need to know where to look or think outside the box (borders) if you want one. Although it sounds as if the 661 non Mtronics are going to becoming a lot easier to get now. Sorry in include Dolmars in the Stihl thread but it’s the only pic I have at the moment.
Did they sell it as non Mtronic? I just checked the Stihl site and only Mtronic is available. What is the third Stihl in the pic JB? Is it an old 460 or a 361?
I really have to take issue with the reasoning here of "trusting a dealer". I can't say that thought process has every worked for me whether it be autos, trucks appliances or insurance people. Service on chainsaws come down to the skill level of the guy turning a wrench, this can vary quite widely. Around here Stihl and Husky ae sold by Farm & Fleet, Ace Hardware, John Deere and the Stihl dealer. The only person I was ever cheated by was the Stihl dealer who told me an 028 Super (this was 15 years ago) wasn't worth putting a carb boot and handle on and he bought it from me with money out of his own pocket, not the till. I wanted to buy a MS260 at the time but he would only show me the MS290 as he said I didn't need a pro line saw. The one distributor I want to mention though is Stihl's partnership with John Deere as it will put the brand in a LOT of showrooms. Well have you ever had anything serviced at a John Deere dealership? With shop rates at John Deere any saw under $500 is going to be thrown away if it needs minor service such as a rim or spur sprocket. John Deere won't look at anything for less than a $100 in labor. FWIW, I deal with a real chainsaw shop that is the Husky dealer. All the pro line users are customers and most of the saws sold are in the XP line.
Yes my logger buddies I am going to see in a few minutes have two of the reintroduced non M Tronic due to all the problems they have had with them. The complaints were so numerous, Stihl bent to the will of the users and brought them back. They had to order them as the dealer pushes the M Tronic.
Yes, they were non-Mtronic from the factory. They traveled about 6k miles to get to me, PHO. They came from a trusted seller overseas. I do have a 261 M-Tronic that I have had no problems with. The other Stihl in the pic is a 440/460 Hybrid
I just took my Stihl CM261C-M Mtronic outside it's 30F using my standard starting procedure, 4 pulls full choke 4 pulls choke off then full choke give it a yank and off it gos, blade brake off 2 quick raps and it is ready for action.
Is that a cold weather start? I have one that cold start fires on choke after 4 pulls. Runs on choke a few secs until throttle blip and away she goes.
It's just what i do warm hot or cold on the first starting, if it's been running and i restart it i just give it a yank.
