Here is our dog Shayna from 1989 when she was about 15 months old that I thought I would share. The top picture is her out on the lake during an ice fishing trip along the MN/Ontario border. She would run behind the snowmobile 5 miles to get to this spot.

Bottom picture is her with my wife in front of the home we were renting on Lake Superior after grouse hunting in Grand Portage MN. I remember that day like it was yesterday. We easily moved over 20 birds, got my limit of 5, and found a moose antler shed.

The folks were were renting from that winter before buying our first home didn't want a dog in the house so she spent winter nights curled up under her favorite pine tree in temps well below -20f. I built her a house, but she preferred being under that tree curled in a ball up so that her tail covered the tip of her nose so it wouldn't freeze. I miss her, but we have so many good memories from her 12.5 years on earth.

She was a good hunting dog, very smart, a loyal companion, yard protector, and ever-vigilant in her constant watch over our three children when they outside. Shayna chased off numerous bears, killed a coyote in our driveway one night while we were sleeping, and stood her ground between the house and two timberwolves that sauntered though the far side of the yard along the woods one morning during our coffee. She was smart enough not to let the lure her into the woods, but stood still with the hair on her back standing up, and showing her fangs while growling and barking. Another time I mouth grunted a huge bull moose into the yard and she stood up to that beast while running circles around him until he crashed his way back into the woods. The bears she would run off a long ways, but knew better than to take things too far in other situations.

I haven't visited this thread in a long time, but I love all the pictures and sentiments related to everyone's special dogs.

Today we picked up Holly. She was a stray in Texas and rescued. She did not make the transport north last weekend, but she left Thursday evening and arrived in Connecticut today.

First I'll say I've watched videos of dog and cats arriving for adoption via transport and being there in person was really nice. Lots of happy dogs and new owners.

Holly is a lab/terrier mix about 30 lbs. Just a nice mutt. She was very nervous when we got her, but the local team of adoption volunteers calmed her down and got her in the truck. After a two hour trip, she woke up in good spirits and went for a walk in the woods out back. She just kept walking and sniffing. Once inside, she went right to her crate and has been sleeping and snoring for several hours. She is a peach so far. We can't wait for the next few days as she settles in. We are just letting her rest and explore on her own terms.

    Settled in a quiet corner.

Mad cat. Half the house is closed off to the cats for a few days.

Congrats on the new addition to your family. Hope the cats forgive you soon for bringing in an outsider ;)

Thank you C. Luna really wants to get back to free roam of the house. Holly will need some time to adjust to her new home. She is staying in the crate with the door open and seems content. My wife is really good with her, so hopefully this morning she will get out for a good walk in the yard and see what is around her.

Day two is much better. Holly remained in her crate most of the morning and did not want to leave it. I made some plain dehydrated chicken strips in the air fryer and coaxed her out. She went right outside for a walk. She gravitates more to my wife, and that is fine.
We took a second walk this afternoon and it seems like we are part of her pack now. She is more relaxed and walks along side each of us looking for re-assurance I think. We give her lots of praises.

When she went inside she walked around exploring the house and checking out one cat. She commandeered the spare cat bed and Luna looked in disbelief.

Poor girl has been thru lots of changes lately so it will take her time to "know" that she is there for good and be comfortable and act like you and your wife ar "her" people.

Luna's look thru the door is priceless
