Yup got a car trailer but don’t use it for wood. That small one I got just for this purpose, think I paid $300 and it was basically new. I don’t know why it hasn’t folded up yet, had it about 5 years now.
Due to the configuration of my shed and driveway fence I can't get my trailer to the stacking area. So that's out. And I don't like shutting down the gas splitter everytime I get a wheelbarrow load. In some ways I miss the electric splitter
I just idle down while stacking the full wheelbarrow. Remember, like TurboDiesel we use pallet bookends, so this goes quickly. I have been known to have my wife Fire Flake return the wheelbarrow and start splitting again so I can restack her attempt. No fussing required.
It sure does. I've tried to remember that step saver as well. Most times I remember, but when I don't I break out the Bluetooth speaker and stack away with tunes going.
For me it depends on where the rounds are being processed in relation to where the wood is getting stacked. Most of the time I split one ATV trailer at a time and then stack it. Right now, I unloaded the recent wood I scrounged near where I'm building some stacks so everything gets split and tossed in a pile and then stacked the next day. I have stacks in three different locations on the property so the ATV trailer sees most of it.
This is how I set things up for splitting. I toss splits into the trailer and when it is full I pull it to the stacks . With this setup, I had blocks on the larger trailer that I was able to put on the splitter. Gives me some variety of tasks and at the end of the day, all the wood that was split is now stacked.
It is not an efficient use of the splitter, but I have rounds organized in rows on pallets. Pull splitter up very close, split and stack 6' away on the pallets the rounds came off of.
Ain’t that the truth! Sometimes ain’t worth the grief to get the stackers working Sometimes the podcast is the most peaceful company!
I took an old pop up tent trailer and made it into an ATV hauler...then I thought, hey, I can put 2' sides on it to haul mulch...when I got home with my 5 yards of (apparently wet) mulch I smelled burning rubber...looking around I couldn't figure out what was going on...finally realized that the slightly oversized 12" tires had rubbed the bottom of the wood deck every time I hit a bump the whole way home! I had to put bump stops on it...
Sounds like it ended better than it could have! Why is it we push our equipment all the way until we wish we wouldn’t have? Just a few more pieces...why would I do this in two trips when I could do it in one....that’s why they call it the manufacturers “recommendation”. Yeah I’m guilty as charged
That might be why my back is hurting right now. The wheelbarrow can handle a little more. Worked great for the silver maple... heaping the wheelbarrow with apple not so much
So in a day and time where work is generally pointless labor that no one will remeber or care about, I enjoy menial jobs that are constructive. Splitting and stacking give me a sense of accomplishment....that I did something worth while. I feel physically good, mentally satisfied, and can look at the pile or yard that was a mess, and is now tidied up. Stacking with a good backwoods, and dog keeping me company...yeah thats good stuff. I second the thoughts of solitude, of un-winding ... S c a
I try not to let the wood hit the ground after I get it into the truck...often times split right off the back of the truck, usually the splits then go into one of my racks to be taken to the main stack to be aged to perfection...
