Always scanning ads for used saws and recently it seems the prices are outrageous.
Like a stihl 362 for $700. I've seen that listed new for $750. Am I missing something or saws have very little depreciation?

Fishing and doesn’t need to sell it.

I scan often too and it’s very rare someone is giving a saw away. When I do find a really good deal it’s usually a case that someone thinks the saw is balled up or thinks it’s too old. In those cases I don’t haggle. I give them what they asked so I don’t feel so bad.

I haven’t come across a GOOD deal in 8 months. So maybe your right, it’s been a dry spell.

I saw a barely used 362 in a pawn shop for $625. I was there for ffl, so that’s where my $ went.

The vast majority of saws are overpriced and as has been said, some are stupid high, as you can buy new for close to the same amount. I'm like, what the heck is this seller thinking? In my lifetime, used prices have gone way, way up. Used is used. That means THE UNKNOWN. It is not new. Usually, there is no warranty. A very hefty discount has to be applied for me to buy anything used.

I bought a used saw for cheap. Cranked it and ran it before I bought it. Got it home and cut wood and guess what... it would die in the cut. Crap like that, THE UNKNOWN, can bite you. If I ever buy a used saw again, I will not buy it without seeing it cut wood.

I have seen on this forum recently where people say that used saws sell uber fast on FB Marketplace. That is surprising to me if it's true. Because there are HUNDREDS of saws for sale in any given area. There must be one helluva market for chainsaws if these saws are selling quickly. Especially for the asking price or anything close to it. I dunno but maybe these forum members are selling quality, professional saws instead of consumer models and maybe they really do sell fast. It seems 95-98% of all saws for sale are consumer models. It would be interesting to me to look at Husqvarna's bottom line financial reports after they went consumer and started selling through big box stores because there are a bazillion Husky consumer saws for sale on any given day. Their revenue must've gone through the roof vs. the old model (Stihl) of selling through dealers only.

Does Ace Hardware SERVICE the saws they sell?, if so would you TRUST them to work on your saws?

If Ace doesn’t provide Trustworthy service for the saws they sell, I wouldn’t consider them any better than Lowe’s as far as being a “Dealer” other than having a better selection than Lowe’s carried.

Around here Coastal sells both Husqvarna and Stihl, and has a better selection than Lowe’s, with a few XP models like the 550XP, 562XP and 372XP, but I consider them a “Retailer” rather than a “Dealer”

    Ours, yes.
The lady (yes, lady) that services the OPE is the tech from a former local hardware/Stihl dealership...

Not just recently...I was looking for a cheap big bore saw a few years back and found nothing (or missed it) that's why I ended up building a MS660 farmertec saw... can't justify bigbux wrapped up in saw that runs maybe 3-5 times per year...

I see very little deals lately, but they are still out there. I like to start a little higher and leave room for negotiation when I sell so start the conversation and see where it goes.

Used prices around here are usually ridiculous, right now on CL is a Husky 240 that MSRP’s at $179.95, that they are asking $175 for, uhm for $4.95, I will pay the extra for a NEW SAW

There is a 435, MSRP $269.99, they are asking $200, Stihl not enough discount on a homeowners grade saw to buy it used

There is a Husky 440 MSRP $299.99, that is listed as “Never Used” still has the clear plastic bar cover and shelf tags on it for $250 FIRM, I don’t need a 440, but for a $50 discount, I might consider it if the fuel and oil tanks are still dry, but $50 is still pretty close to the buy it New breaking point. I have never needed the warranty on any of my Huskies, but it is still nice to have

Used saw prices are mostly insane. On salem OR craigslist someone wants 920$ for an 044 with some listed recent work. It's not uncommon to see 391 stihls, and 455 Husqvarna for 400$ and these are usually 5-8 year old saws. I've even seen older box store homelites, craftsman, etc for 125$ insane.

Same around here, good quality pro grade saws at 75 to 90% of new & homeowner stuff 80 to 95% new price. Not many deals to be had right now. I'd buy a good saw used & reworked from someone here or OPE forum if I was gonna buy used right now. Much better odds of getting a good saw.

Man or Woman, if they have proven their ability, I would have them work on my saws

I’m a truck driver, and a Black Lady that I worked with before our dedicated account closed, has EARNED my Respect both Personally and Professionally. If I had my own company, I would hire her in a heartbeat, she also became a valued FRIEND, to both myself and my Wife, who calls her my work Wife

I see some insane prices for used saws around here as well. I haven’t seen any decent deals in quite awhile.

I just posted my Stihl 026 for $225 and my stihl 260 for $300 and I doubt I will get any bites. I’m just selling because I want a 261c for Christmas!

I guess some people don’t like saws as much as we do!

Not a huge fan of used mechanical stuff due to being burned too many times in the past (mostly vehicles and motorcycles). It's always caveat emptor of course, however it would seem most people will sugar coat the **** out of the description of whatever they are selling just to get it out the door.

With that being said, I am browsing the used saws out of curiosity as I am considering a 462 or even a 661. The 59cc 362 I have is great, however I came across a few trees this year where something in the 70cc and up range would have been nice to have.

I'm not in the market for Huskys however there is a 'brand new' 460 Rancher for sale a couple hours from me for $450.00. Over half less than a 462 but also only 60cc so no upgrade from my 362.

I agree with you on not a fan of used stuff, and when it comes to chainsaws am sure from what i see in the forums, many take really poor care of them.
Myself i just buy new chainsaws this was if they have problems i know who caused them.

I know a female mobile small engine mechanic. I like her, because she troubleshoots than explains what’s wrong, shows me where to buy the part and tells me how I can do it myself, or I can pay her to do it. If there is a way to avoid an issue she explains how. $35 a visit

I agree for the most part, but for some items that are NLA, used is the ONLY Option, like the much vaunted 346XP, they are so talked about, and have a near Cult Like following that I was curious and wanted one. Other than a couple NOS ones that were over $800 with shipping on ebay, used was the only option. I have bought a few other saws used, and haven’t had any problems yet, but NEW is my preference when possible

I wonder if farm sales could be a good bet, sometimes. Although, I see a lot of stuff at the few farm sales I have went to, that went for new prices, to the point, I pretty much decided to never waste my time going to one again.

I know a small engine mechanic/chainsaw dealer that works out of a building at his house. He has Stihl and Husqvarna new and used. The most saws I’ve ever seen in one place. He has out buildings storing new saws and semi trailers full of parts saws. It’s a bad place for a saw lover to be. More Stihl and Huskies than any dealer and has tons of older models. The problem is he is a poor mechanic and very proud of his inventory, but it’s eye popping inventory. I’ve been many times just to see them, but I don’t take $. I had my eye on a new looking 288xp and asked how much. He said I’m a 288 man it’s not for sale.
He gets a lot of his saws from a flee market.

Went to a farm auction a couple a weeks ago to bid on an 2004 GMC Canyon with 48,000 miles. It went for $15,750! About twice the value! 90% of the stuff was junk and the good stuff went for stupid money. I can’t figure out why people pay more than stuff is worth! I’m done wasting my time with auctions .
