The back side has a tarp also but isn’t as exposed to the prevailing winds, but can be rolled down quickly and easily too. With the tarps attached to the shed eaves, they hang loosely away from the wood, and still allow for decent circulation. The wood is stacked on 2x6’s arranged vertically, with 4-6” clearance under them, so these sheds breathe pretty well Doug
With snow on the way, figured I’d get out this afternoon between shifts for a quick load. Had a big red oak limb and another red oak tree down behind my dads. Cut, split, and stacked in two and a half hours. Feel good work!
Making a lot of progress there Halfcut... I nibble away at collecting firewood myself... Your doing really great.. You can see that green colored fresh cut Black Locust in your stacks.. That pickup load of oak looks like close to 1/2 cord, cut, hauled, split and stacked by yourself in a few hours sounds good to me..
Black locust was a top that broke off in a ladies front yard. Trunk still stands. Asked her if she thought the tree would survive and she said no. Asked her if she wanted me to call it and take it as well so she didn’t have to worry about it. She said her friend told her if someone fell it wrong, it may pull her natural gas service out of the ground. Easier to move on to the next score than to try and convince her otherwise Thankful for what I got! That trunk is gonna be staring at me every time I drive by there now, and it’ll probably end up rotting and falling on its own. Waste of good firewood.
Out cutting at one of my spots today and a guy I know comes pulling back into the field. I said hi and asked him what he was up to. He said the farmer wants him to remove the fencerow and he was giving him a quote. So I call farmer tonight and tell him I’m glad to remove the fencerow and am just interested in the wood. He says, well your welcome to cut what you want till we remove it. Guess I know what I’ll be doing with my free time! Used all the gas and bar oil I had to cut what I could and fall a few for the morning. Split a truck and trailer then stacked it. Heading back in the morning with two fresh gallons of fuel and 2 gallons of bar oil! Gotta get what I can. Thinking I’ll cut everything I can and stage it for splitting later. Lot of cherry and a few oak trees. I’ll prioritize them first.
Um yeah! Gonna do some counting tomorrow to see how many trees are cherry and oak. That should give me a good idea. Lots of small stuff I’ll get if I have time to get all the cherry and oak. There’s one oak I’m not even gonna mess with it’s so big. Just would take time. Lot of the cherry that’s 18-24 diameter. More to follow tomorrow
Three truck/trailer loads today. Needless to say, I’m sore tonight! Cut the wood, load the rounds, drive the load to my wood yard, unload the rounds, then go back and do it all over 3x. Figured I won’t mess with splitting till I either get it all or they come in with the excavator. Get all I can while the gettings good. Plan to get another two loads tomorrow.
2 more loads today. Hope I have the time for two more tomorrow. Into some nice size stuff for handling tomorrow. Some of the rounds today were 24-28 across. Green and heavy! Piles growing!
After hunting the morning, it was Back out today for some more cutting and hauling. Had some help from my wife and son, which helped a ton! Kids enjoyed watching the felling, with the largest being the last. A two trunked cherry with a 30” diameter base. Entertainment at its best! Got an additional 2 loads. Gonna hit it again tomorrow. I’ll keep you all posted on the progress
Thanks, it’s been fun. Really nice cutting in the fencerow and nice being able to cut a whole tree. I’m so used to just cutting tops in the woods, this is spoiling me for sure!
Those are some beautiful rounds! Wish i had an area like that to dump multiple loads of rounds. Used to but landlord put an end to it. Get it while the gettins good!
Thanks brad! Back at it today. Had some help from father in law with cutting and brother in law helped load for a couple hours. I would fall the tree and buck the trunk while father in law worked from the top. Never stopped to take any pictures but I’ll get some more tomorrow. Ended up cutting about 5 cords and hauled about 4 cords to the hoard. I’ll go get the rest of it tomorrow, but gonna be helping the kids with virtual learning so can’t spend the whole day out there.
Made it out after virtual learning with the kiddos to retrieve what I had cut and left yesterday. Took a saw full of gas to fall two more trees and buck up most of them so I can go grab another load tomorrow. Here’s some pics of the carnage so far. Had my son count the fresh stumps to see how many I’ve taken so far, and came up with 29! Love having the company and help of my boy
It’s probably about 7 or 8 miles from my wood yard. 14 miles from home. Not too bad, but definitely slow and steady with a full load
Had some help from my father in law and his saw yesterday while I too cut and loaded. Added another 8 face cord. Up to 16 cord I’ve been able to get out of the fence row. Still trying to get all I can! Got rained out today, but it was good to have a day off from it. Have another days worth of retrieving the more easy to process stuff then I’ll move on to the bigger stuff. I’ll get some pics of the carnage next time I’m out there. Hopefully able to do some cutting tomorrow and maybe haul some a couple days later once things dry up a bit.
Made it out this afternoon for a couple hours. Got mostly cherry, 1 small hickory, and some oak. This brings me to approximately 17 cord from this fencerow I’ve been working on for almost 2 weeks.
