Swamp Cherry

Not really a species that I know of, but a Cherry near the swamp.

Hiking with the wife to manage the trails cams and decided this one could go. And I had someone with me. So we got a video.




Went back this after noon to bring it back.

Was it dead, looks like it's missing some bark.

 

Windy day tomorrow. There may be opportunities for more!

 

it was and more so now.
Brought the saw to clear more at the other camera. Not at this one. But I noticed this tree was obstructing 25% of the view of the camera, mounted to the white oak just on the videographer side of me.

And finally I looked up and realized it is dead. Killed two birds with one saw.

How'd yous git dem rounds in dat buggy anyhows?

Cherry doesn't do well in wet areas. Probably the area was dryer when it began to grow and after a few years something changed that didn't allow the soil to dry killing the tree. Just a shot in the dark.

 

Don’t know. I’ve been in these woods for 40+ years and it looks the same to me year after year. You may be right and just 1 or 2 inches of ground water elevation makes that difference. I’ll pay specific attention to the Cherries now.

 

Can't say that I recall ever seeing a black cherry growing in the swamp proper. Near the edge maybe.
An occasional hemlock or pine, a young beech, a yellow birch. Mostly red maple and Atlantic white cedar. There are still stumps from Atlantic white cedar here and at one time there may have/must have been many more of them. The deer and maple are pretty hard on any that try to make a come back.
