I have to get over in that area soon since the summer weeds are falling down so I'll be able to find if they are coming up. I'm actually looking forward to next spring before the weeds take off to walk through there looking for sprouts. I have seen several holes where squirrels have dug the walnuts up but I'm sure they won't get them all. I'll also wait till deer season is over before trampling through there. It always warms my heart to see conservation efforts take place that will leave our planet a better place for the future. I commend all who endeavor to improve this planet we call home.
I love planting trees. the thought that someone will be able to use the trees in another 50-70 years is awesome
I'm hoping to clear out some areas of my woods that have "scrub trees" and tree of heaven and plant a variety of fruit trees and oak trees in the future. Trying to establish some permanent food plots and hit sides of the conservation coin.
If you can’t pull out the trees of heaven, don’t cut them off, as they spread like crazy and come back worse. There is a chemical you can get, which name escapes me now. You make hatchet cuts and then put the chemical in. Good to kill them, as in this area Spanish lantern fly prefer them most also
There are many mail order native tree nurseries, but I have used this one with good success. Go Native Trees – Dedicated to the understanding, preservation, and recovery of the Eastern American forest
I was pleased to find your link to that company and excited to find a source for many native trees I am interested in but clicked on the price list of trees and it's a dead link and then upon perusing the site further, they don't have but two trees -- hickories and chestnut. Bummer. I don't get why they promote having the "largest selection of Eastern native woody plant species available anywhere." Any idea?
Yeah, I forgot about the lantern fly. I read they recommend taking all the female TOH out and leave males in, then put lantern fly traps on the male trees. I'll have to look for the chemical as I have no way to pull out the trees.
The hyperlink in their ad copy that I clicked on is a dead link -- https://dev5.axiomwebworks.com/download/price-list/ Thanks for providing a proper link in your other post. I should notify them their page needs updating. It was also confusing because they only have hickory and chestnut in their menu. They need a little web work. They do have a lot of species but, my, that would get expensive!
