Perhaps this is just Locust, if there is such a thing. Regardless, you can see from the pics that this does tear but on a few rounds, it split alot easier. Maybe it has something to do with how straight the tree was or which part of the tree is being split. Also, keep in mind that I'm splitting all of this by hand. I'm not sure how your log splitter works in that, does it keep pushing the round until it splits entirely? With an axe, you might split it half way but the strands keep the lower half from splitting. The Hickory I have, the rounds of which have been seasoning for six years, is unbelievably dense. I slam the axe down with all the force I have, starting the axe from the other side of me and winding up like I'm John Henry and it just sticks in the round. Then on the next swing, if my aim is good enough, I hit that same crack and my axe sinks down more, and so on. Most of the time though, I don't hit the same crack so I end up swinging so many times to split a round that it's just not worth it. I did use a maul a few times and just hammered that in but it takes so long. It's funny, I've watched some videos on youtube of people showing you how to split wood. They have these perfectly symetircal small rounds of bone dry pine or cherry or maple. When the person swings, you can hear the hollow sounds of the wood as the piece hits the ground, like each log weighs about a pound. It's dryer and lighter than a 2X4. I don't know what world they live in but tress dont grow like that here. I mean, who out there can actually use a tire? Aren't your rounds knarly and shaped with bends and curves........ Regardless, I'm glad I'm done.
I hear you brother. If I had to hand split I think I’d just stop burning wood or buy wood that’s already split well ahead of time.I just don’t have the time or desire to hand split my wood. Gathering 8 full cords/year from standing trees while working a full time job, having a family, and a large property to maintain is hard enough as is.
Alucard you really need some hydraulics! Then if you are like me you will fall in love with it after one split and wonder why you didn't have one of these years ago. I used to enjoy splitting with axe or maul but no more. Of course injury and age are factors.
