This was collateral damage from the loggers. Any guesses?

Thanks guys. Maybe I am just used to larger trees that really have the bark curling away from the truck. The green also through me off.
It wasn’t too bad to saw through. It is all splintered near the root ball, but there is about 25’ of trunk before it “Y’s” into two 30’ limbs. Should net 3/4 of a cord.

  6. looks like hickory to me

It takes a pretty good hit to splinter hickory. Must have had a biggun fall on it.

Shagbark it is. Have three of them in my backyard. Save some of the bark, soak it in water for 20 to 30 minutes, then put it on your charcoal grill. Makes your Q so much better.

    Congratulations!!!

Once you get it split and stacked, give it good time to dry right but even then do not get in a hurry to burn it. Save that stuff until you are having one of those super cold spells with below zero weather and burn it then.

I’ll try and get a picture next time I am out in the woods. All trees taken by the loggers had a diameter of 24” or greater. A few were 4’-5’ across.

I am between homes right now so not burning wood. This may get lost in the shuffle as there is probably 75 cords in tops and rootball cutoffs on the ground.

The shag has been slayed. Some of the trunk rounds are almost “squares”. upload_2020-11-19_15-48-6.jpeg upload_2020-11-19_15-48-39.jpeg upload_2020-11-19_15-49-7.jpeg

    Thanks!
My back new it was there when I was walking the rounds 40 feet to the truck. The truck only had to go 100 feet to the pallets I am stacking them on.

If there's any way you can save the shag for future use, do it. That stuff is pretty much the best firewood that you can get.
