I was able to get out to work on finishing up bucking the last of the logs I had laying over by the 22 / 23 drying area. Was able to use all 3 saws. I like to make sure they all get some run time. These stacks will get split this winter probably under the light bar in the evenings. There are a couple turnip patches over in this area for feeding the deer. They have been hitting the turnips as more and more of the farm crops are coming off the fields around our area. The plan is that we will have lots of the deer hanging out here. I can't keep out of the turnip patches myself either... LOL I fried up a few with an onion for dinner tonight. Turnips were one of my Grandfather's favorites. He always put out a big patch every year. This is the first year we put any out. My nephew (HUGE deer hunter) wanted to put out the plots and we ended up putting well over an acre of turnips, parsnips, and kale in three different plots.
On man, fired Turnips, haven't had those since I was a kid in Arkansas! Nice work on the log pile too.
Around here, farmers plant turnips and radishes in fields know as feed lots. Basically a field you farm for corn or soybeans but maybe weren't able to plant all of it because of wet ground. Then the turnips or radishes aren't harvested, and that's to feed cattle over winter. Then the cattle will dig them up and have something to eat.
Please let me know how well the turnips work out for the deer this year. I have planted radishes 2 years in a row now and were told the deer would not hit them until they got some good size to them. Wrong! It did not take long before it looked like sheep had been grazing. Nothing left of them.
Dennis- I have planted turnips and radishes for 5-6 years now. The first several years, the deer would eat the tops a little bit, and then the actual turnips in the late part of our deer season, after a good hard freeze. Last year I noticed the deer ate the tops earlier and more aggressively, and ate the turnips from mid November on. This year I had the best crop ever-many turnips were softball sized or bigger. Starting in October, the deer have been eating both the tops and the turnips. I think every turnip on the 1/2 acre plot has been nibbled on. I have heard it mentioned that it takes deer a while to get the taste for them. It seems to be the case here. Will
We had a bad weekend. My wife Jennifer ended up in the hospital and we need all the prayers we can muster. She was battling the bug all last week from home and we thought she had it beat Thurday and Friday. Saturday evening a little tickly cough started and Sunday afternoon, BAM, O2 saturation dropped and off to the ER we went. We are optimistic, hopeful, and very scared all at the same time. Pneumonia is an ugly scary thing. She has been my best friend, confidant, and bestest helper ever. I need her to get better and get back home.
Best wishes for you her and all the family. I can sympathise as Ms. buZZsaw has been hit with the same several times. She has COPD.
Yeah, we'll definitely say a prayer. My wife has a lot of health issues, shes my best friend too, so I know how if feels. Pretty scary. Take care of your wife, and also take care of yourself too so you can take care of your wife.
Thanks Will. Talking to folks around here none seem enthustic about turnips as it is usually after rifle season before the deer start hitting them. Of course this could help what is left to make it into the winter but no help for hunting. I'm leaning to go back to oats and maybe a little rye and also more clover.
Prayers for you and Jennifer. May she get over this as quickly as possible. And I remember both of you well after we met last fall. A good time was had at Walt's.
Good news this morning. They have taken her off of the high flow oxygen and put her back on a standard oxygen nasal cannula. We are hopeful the worst is over and she is on the road to recovery. She says she will be able to relax easier without the very noisy High Flow machines in her room. Thank you all for your positive thoughts and prayers. It means a great deal to us that there are great people out there that care and share with others. Monte and Jenny
