Within a mile of my house there's an A&W and a morr local place called Swensons both still have car hops. A&W stopped having the skating car hops because insurance reasons. Don't know if Swenson's ever had them
Guessing it was the Hojos just off Rt 2 & 95, in Bangor? I used to service the big sign out by the highway. The roof hatches were always blowing off... and the pigeon chit (and dead birds) were always fun. Birds would fly into that area and sit on the signs wiring... which wasn't habit forming once the 15,000 volt neon transformers kicked on... ...
There is a root beer stand in La Crosse that is only open spring through fall and they have carhops on roller skates.
Yessir. You worked at Bangor neon I take it. Did you by chance live off the horseback on the Rt 2 end? By Jeanne Savoy.
I owned a couple of these.... Those Choppers were Great, I think Ross had a version as well. The Ape Hangers were classic. Raising the “sissy” bar was always a favorite of the guys that owned them by me
Does anyone remember frozen custards? I love them but rarely find one. Found a couple in CA and one in MO but none local any more.
I worked at Bangor Neon from 81 to 84, and then went off on my own. We did Hojo's service work at that time. I think I met Jeanne, but I'm not sure. She was at BN after I left. Any chance you know Bill McCall?
Probably why the name is familiar. I did a science project in jr high on gas lighting. They gave me a bunch of stuff to do it. Fried my azz on the transformer once. That’s when neon was still king.
