Been lurking for a while and have been learning quite a bit. Moved into our current house in 2016 and it had a very inefficient fireplace. Finally got it replaced this summer with an Enviro Bostonian 1200 insert. So far so good. It keeps the wife toasty and the heat off for the time being! Lots of great knowledge around here and I hope to keep learning. The biggest learning curve for me is wood ID. I bought a small booklet from Amazon that has helped but it is mainly based off of leaves. A co-worker sent me a text recently asking if I wanted some wood from a few trees he had taken down. Question is, I don't know what type of wood it is. I'll still take it but I'm unsure of the woods quality. Any ideas on what kind of tree these are? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm not very good at tree identification.

My guess is Shagbark Hickory (maybe). If that's right, then that's because I'm a tree ID specialist and if it's wrong its because I lie about being a tree ID specialist.

    I like that reply.

Doesn't remind me of shag.. possibly Elm.

But.. I also am not a tree ID specialist, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn last night.
    ;)

My 2 guesses are a mossy white oak, or river birch.

Welcome to FHC. As long as its not rotten, free wood is always worth it. I see saving on the heating bill right there, I agree that it has the look of some kind of hardwood.

Welcome to FHC, rd. Can't have enough Bay Staters!

That's an interesting avatar you have. A ship you served on?

I have no idea what kind of wood that is. Sorry. I'm sure enough opinions/guesses will continue to be posted.

Welcome to FHC. My vote is some kind of hardwood also, and it will make good heat after being cut and split and dried for 2-3 years.

    Welcome to the club.
I vote river birch but not sure without seeing some smaller limbs.
Don’t worry to much about ID, just get all you can & eventually you will learn what is what, & what to skip over.
How do you split? Hand or hydro

I'm going to change my answer to this one. This is definitely the right answer.

I like that avatar! Did you serve on this one?

Hard to believe but it seems most of us are undecided about the wood except that you should get it.

Being relatively new here, you should do some reading. Here is a good place to start: Primer on Woodburning by Backwoods Savage
