Was going to build a firewood rack. Checked prices of lumber. A few months ago, a 2x4 was about $3. Now, it's $5.70. Sheesh, what? Have you noticed that in your area? My only explanation is five hurricanes hitting this state in one season. I also notice that it seems many more logging trucks are passing by my house than a few months ago, which is a route they take to go to the mill. Wonder if timber is paying more.
Northern hardwood raw material prices are very depressed. End user prices are up. Someone in the middle is making a killing!
plant shutdowns, lack of trucking and rail transport, people at home building giant wood sheds and decks, TP hoarding, that's why/ supply and demand at it's finest. If you thought it is bad now, I can tell you that it was way worse for pricing, and supply over pretty much all of summer
[QUOTE=I am told the Pt guys are buying much more for the deck building etc caused by people staying home. There is also a shortage with mill shut downs they say but I agree the middle guys are making big profits.I was trying to build a house the lumber in may was $18.000 in Oct $28000. I also here there is shortage of bath tubs furnaces etc but thus far I have no explored that
Prices up here are crazy too! Osb sheeting is more expensive than plywood! Ive postponed a few building projects around the house and yard just because of the increases
I'm paying exorbitant prices in New England all of a sudden during this pandemic! Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
To many people burning firewood. Here is a link to some of the reasons. A good read. Why Strong Demand and Tight Supply Have Caused Lumber Prices to Soar - NEBS.
I had to buy some two by sixes to put in a new window. 7 cost $112. I would have put it off but the old window didn’t survive AC ritual There are crazy shortages here on refrigerators, any lumber, most bathroom fixtures, kitchen stoves and anything PT. CDX aka chip board is over $40 a sheet
I want to say the last 10’ 2x4’s I bought were $9.86 ea. It’s the reason I started using pallets for stacking firewood.
I just bought 2 sheets of 3/8 chip board the other weekend, was $30 per sheet here, every thing is getting very expensive. Yet the big log lot and mill just shut down here, loggers can't sell there wood, they have gone to cutting popple as the hard wood is just sitting they have no place to go with it.
There’s definitely a shortage in appliances. For seven or eight months they were building essential items only. I bought a new dishwasher in June from ABC warehouse expecting it would be delivered in a couple days. I still haven’t seen that dishwasher yet
Yes! We had substantial delays in building our addition this Spring due to lack of PT lumber and long delays in getting appliances. Sorry to hear it doesn't seem to be getting better yet.
I keep receiving apologetic emails about once a month. Hopefully one of these days it will be setting up a shipping date
My neighbor is rebuilding his rear deck. He re used the framing, but did give me all the old 5/4x6 PT deck boards. Still in good shape. I made the 8’ man box and the 8’ woodshed addition from the last batch. Yesterday I got the rest of them. He waited so long to take them off because his new composite boards took like 4-5 months to come in
Yes. I was working with a contractor friend helping put an addition on his daughters house. They paid nearly $8 for an 8' 2x4. This was in Massachusetts. Covid mustve affected the supply chain somehow. Generic wood building materials have gone way up. Sheet of 7/16 OSB was around $25.
Glad I made this thread because it did not even dawn on me that covid could be the culprit here, I was just thinking hurricanes. I know one thing... I am putting off two building projects because lumber is just too high for these "non-essential" projects, they can wait a bit! Maybe it will go down in a few months.
