There are a couple other red oak and trailer threads right now, but figured I would start one with pics from the log landing. My logger buddies called me this week and said to "come get some wood". It is super nice and probably the last decent day for golf but I took today off. Went and got a load yesterday after golf and met them for lunch on the logs and go another load. Getting a decent start, 4 loads so far.
Looks great. Probably split with a couple whacks of the maul, too! How do you clean the dirt, go around it with the axe where you're going to cut?
Dirt is just the price admission on cable skidded logs. Semi chisel and 404 chain helps a lot. But when the logs are on the trailer it is tough to run that big a saw. I cut into rounds on the trailer and load into the loader tractor and take to the stack for storage. I put 6" posts on the bottom of the trailer so everything can be cut in place.
I saw the dirt on the logs in the very first pic. Too bad you have to deal with it, but can't beat the price! Ya know, Lacrosse isn't that far from me......
I wanna come & play! Nice looking day out there too. I took a couple days off work to get stuff done, gonna work on my log deck tomorrow & Saturday.
Those saws belong to the loggers. They absolutely HATE the 661 autotunes. They just got 2 more carbed 661 that Stihl brought back due to the pros not liking the auto tunes. They like the carbed ones much better due to hot start issues. I have the same opinion of Husky auto tunes too due to hot start issues. I have 3 Huskys, Two 562s and one 550XP. 2 of the the three are gone and the final 562XPG is on borrowed time. I just took another 357XP out of storage to supplement the other 357. I find it is quicker to just switch saws than spend much time sharpening in the field other than a few strokes with a file.
These are pro loggers that I bribe with Honeycrisp apples I grow. They load my trailer with scraps from the log landings that is defective. I make contact with the landowners and will work this site on what is left during the Winter months. I already have sold run of this property when they are done. Generally one site can satisfy me for a year, there is a lot of waste in logging. But this year I have 3 other landowners that want me to clean up for a total of 4 landings. I almost never deal with tops as it is too putzy and time consuming, plus the difficulty of accessing due to the very steep slopes we have. What you trade wood for these apples?
I'm closer than you But still, that's a long way to haul logs. La Crosse is a really nice area. My wife went to college there and we spent a lot of time there. Certainly enjoy that area. I really like the "driftless" area that surrounds La Crosse and extends down Southwest of Madison. Great motorcycle roads. OP. Nice find!
