39 and 76 burning coals down with hemlock. Rain and 40’s today but sun and 50’s coming back later in the week.
I was doing some work on the property yesterday and noticed an old multi trunk hop hornbeam that had two trunks dead but still standing. The bark was falling, or had fallen off so it had been there awhile. I cut it and bucked it. It was enough to fill a large Vermont cart. I just built this mornings fire with it and it is burning perfectly slow and steady. Great heat & no hissing. Going to keep my eyes open for more in the future. I think this is my new favorite wood.
39* out 72* in.....it was 32* when I went to bed so it actually warmed up a bit overnight. We're supposed to get more rain today with a high of 54*. Just a few splits of elm will do the job again today.
I laugh about that too when I see it! 99 asks about it and I just tell her that the overnight low will be the high for the day. Clear as mud!
Snow and 23 overnight. And..........lets not forget the wind! The snow in the yard was just about gone yesterday and now everything is once again covered. So goes the "introduction to winter".
We had 34.5 this morning with a load of Cherry going in the wood stove. All the batteries are changed in the smoke and our propane gas detectors this morning.
It warmed overnight from the 30's to 50. Just put a few splits of cherry and highly valuable black walnut in the box. I had a chuckle since I haven't got the patio stack in place yet I am just bringing a few arm loads up from the stack and wondered on a few pcs. of walnut.
I see that alot here. The high for the day would be taken right after midnight and the high later in the day would be much lower.
I remember burning some walnut in the past.A large score that a neighbor who had some large walnuts taken down.I just couldn't get that wood to burn hot,Maybe I didn't let it season enough after almost a year. How long does this stuff need to season before it's ready ? Beautiful wood though.
It is not the best as we were just discussing in the "everybody's thoughts on burning black walnut" thread. As far as how long until it is ready I cannot say for sure. That's the joy of being ahead, all the wood I burn is usually a minimum of 3 years split and stacked. I think the pile I pulled this from was 5 years old maybe.
Here is another one for you. MIZ006-007-013-014-085-012100- /O.CON.KMQT.WW.Y.0021.201101T1200Z-201102T0000Z/ Alger-Luce-Delta-Southern Schoolcraft-Northern Schoolcraft- Including the cities of Grand Marais, Munising, Newberry, Escanaba, Gladstone, Manistique, and Seney 251 AM EST Sun Nov 1 2020 ...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM EST THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Lake effect snow and considerable blowing snow expected. Notice that Escanaba and Gladstone are in the warning. Yet, look at the "additional details" at the end. Did they move those two towns or did they move Rapid River? Now about that wind... Did you really feel the need to send it here?
Was the first fire we have had to ha e in a few weeks. In 7 to 8 days It is supposed to be back in the upper 70s
That might make more sense if you change 'high' to 'daytime' and 'low' to 'overnight'. written forecasts often have more explicit context to numbers
Does it make more sense if they wrote that along the western shore of Little Bay would have lower accumulations, probably due to the warm lake water and their proximity to it ?
Freeze warning for us. Had both stoves going last night. Blackgum in the basement and Red Maple on the main floor. Blackgum sucks splitting, but it burns hot imo. Lot’s of folks still without power, so it’s going to be a cold night for many.
