Yeah, that's probably cottonwood. Since it's easy to get to and close to home, might as well take it.
Th El The good thing is it's been drying for a while and doesn't stink anymore. Yeah I pulled my truck right up to the tree. Going back in a bit after the batteries charge up.
Ok after splitting the first round, now I'm pretty sure it's..... Poplar! Light and it's got a little bit of a spicy smell to it. And it's got those green streaks in the wood.... what sayeth y'all?
Out West it may be. Say poplar around the NE and i think of tulip aka yellow poplar. If you scored tulip i think you did okay. Im using some now and wish i had more. Cut green around Christmas and ready to go now. Ive never cut cottonwood.
If im not mistaken the axe wouldve sunk right into the wood if it were cottonwood and not bounced off. The stuff is very soft.
Only time ive score tulip. Around Christmas last year. Asplundh cutting locally. Heres the thread Not a Poplar Score With Me!
Still waiting for parts!!!! As you saw the mail sank in pretty good. Most strokes sank in. It is very wet and light and soft.
Yeah the top part of that trunk I'm leaving as it has rotted. The rest looks pretty fresh.....and wet...
it'll be light as a feather and ready to burn in 9 months if its poplar. Makes lots of heat, just doesn't last long. Good for knocking the chill off. Ive burned many cords .
Yeah I like mixing in the spruce with my hardwoods....Used the splitter and made the poplar a little smaller so that I can use it as a startup for the fireplace. Yeah it's definitely poplar - very light and has the hollow sound but measured in at 23.4% MC. It may even be dry by the end of this winter but will definitely be ready for next year. I'm absolutely thrilled with the spruce kindling I made. It was damm dry (10-12%) and lights up right away with just one stick of fatwood.
Cottonwood. In my area, cottonwood is also called poplar because we have no real poplar in the area(well, not much). I'm a little too far south for true poplar.
