Anybody ever tried this 2-stroke oil? The Wood Wolverine I was at the local bike shop picking up some other stuff and saw it on the shelf, so I picked up a pint to try it out. I'm sensitive to the smell of 2-stroke oils and I run a lot through my ported saws, like 32:1.
Mmm...bean oil...love that smell... I've never used it that much, but I've heard that it doesn't do very well in cold weather...separates or something...and you want to only mix up as much as you will use right away...doesn't store well or something...not sure what the problem is, just going by what I always heard from the motocross guys...
Matter of fact, I just got through a quart of it myself. I personally didn’t care for the smell. And being a bike oil, it very well may gum up your saw at a heavy ratio. I know Klotz R50 does, but do I love the smell of it! I recently went back to my local Stihl/Echo dealer and picked up a 6 pack of Red Armor. I really like that erl.
And heavy ratio I mean 40/1 and more. Tune was good on this: Moral of the story, use caution when using bike oils.
I think oil threads can be useful, until said peeing match starts. I'm just sharin' my own experience.
Thanks Jason. I'm of the camp that just about any decent 2-stroke oil should be fine as long as it's mixed correct and carb is tuned. I was just curious to run some bean oil since I'm very hit-or-miss with smell of oils. This was definitely not a "what's the best oil?" thread, just asking the hive mind for experiences.
Just have to be cautious with oils intended for motorcycle use. Some/most don't burn complete with the relatively low load of a chainsaw. Milling is a different story, the high heat gets it done in that application. Just don't run it all the time, or if you do, pull the top end to do an inspection to see exactly what it's leaving behind. I ran the Klotz for a good while because I love the smell, then I was properly educated on it and after pulling apart the Jonsey-red, I saw what I pictured above. Goo! That saw had proper tune too (and @ 40/1). If you are sensitive to smell at all, check out the Red Armor. I find it very very acceptable in that department. I used the Husky XP oil forever till I started milling. It about knocked me out with fumes, that's what led me to Klotz and then to RA for it's ability to clean up said goo.
I, too, am sensitive to exhaust fumes/oil smell. Last year, I switched to Echo Red Armor. It turns the gas red and I like that for ease of identifying if need be. As for smell, I really screwed up recently and poured bar oil into the fuel mix side of my dual fuel/oil can. I poured it all out but residue is left and my saws are smoking like crazy and stink, lol. Makes my eyes burn. I mix at 40:1 but I wonder what the residue bar oil makes it. I have been thinking of diluting it some with some 50:1 or whatever to just make it better. I assume it won't hurt my saws.
Castor is very good for water cooled and engines that are disassembled/ rebuilt frequently. The carbon buildup is significant in aircooled engines that have higher head temperature.
Picked up a 6-pack of the 5.2 oz (2 gal. size) of Echo Red Armor for $15 today. I'll mix some up with fresh no-E gas for next weekend's cutting. If I like it, that should last me a very long time.
I run all my 2 stroke engines at 32 to 1. I have tried some motorcycle racing oil but I mainly like oils that are 100% synthetic. I have used Amsoil and Stihl and Klotz and some others I cannot remember the name right now. I happen to think the 32 to1 is better for the bottom end of the engine and a good 100% synthetic oil will not gum up. As far as castor oil goes I have heard that it can really gum up but have never experienced it myself.
Amsoil Dominator, Red Armor, Schaeffers, and Golden Spectro are the top 4 in a lean ratio test by an OPE member. They were all relatively clean inside also. Can definitely smell Amsoil, sort of addictive. Didn’t notice much smell with Red Armor or Schaeffers. Never tried Golden Spectro
Klotz R50. Good 100% synthetic oil. It’ll gum up any saw that isn’t millin. That’s what caused pics above. This saw had a tune that wasn’t fat either: Tear down was after that vid. huskihl Schaeffers meant for air cooled engines?
