Firewood trailers need new wiring connector

I actually have three small trailers I use to haul firewood. I use 4-way flat connector plugs like the image/link at bottom. I don't like these. They have the three male pins and that's not the problem; the female connector that has the plastic around it... I am forever struggling to get that inserted to connect. Even spraying with WD40, it's still a pain. I would like to get something better. On down the road, I might be hauling a camper trailer, a large utility trailer or whatever... and those use entirely different gizmos, 6-way or is it 7-way plugs. I would like for all of my connectors to fit my truck hookup. Any recommendations how to best do this so it works?

They make adapters to go from flat to round. That would be the easiest solution. They're only around $8-$10. Any auto parts store would have them.

 

7-way RV plug is what you’re after. The 4 way flat plugs only last about a year here with the winter salt.

If nothing else call these guys to get their catalog. ( Some nice wiring info) I've used them a bunch for parts. I had a problem with a harness I bought for using with my dump trailer and tractor and when I called them they talked this dummy through the fix. Welcome to Weaver Distributing

 

What kind of truck? Check your manual and see if the size trailer you are planning to pull requires a brake controller. See if you are pre-wired for a seven-way plug and brake controller if necessary. If not, you’ll have to run the wires yourself. You can use some di-electric grease on the connections to prolong their life and to make easier to install and remove. I have used etrailer for several things.

 

X2 on the di-electric grease and etrailer. Etrailer is a great company. I’ve spent a lot of money with them. They have advisors that can point you in the right direction about literally anything trailer related. They stand behind their products, and their prices are great. I always shop around, and they are consistently the lowest price on the stuff I need.

 

I doubt any of his trailers have ebrakes if they all have 4 pin plugs.

I don't have trailer brake wiring but have looked into getting it wired because I bought a used camper trailer (that is stationary at this time) and I also have been looking at larger utility trailers. So, it's part of the reason for the post... wishing to get all my trailers, whatever they are, using the same connectors.

 

I have a 10k utility and 14k dump. The truck was pre wired with a 7 pin receptacle and plug for a brake controller. I have one of these.

I also have a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter that I can use if I need to haul a smaller trailer with a 4 pin plug. I think an adapter would be easier than rewiring the plug on all of your trailers. It would allow you to tow other trailers without rewiring them too.

Check the limits for your tow vehicle and do your best to stay within the limitations.
