Used the 361 today for the first time since the OPE dealer fiasco. Big pin oak downed by TS Isaias back in early August ive been nibbling at. Prefer to use the bigger saw on the big wood. Before. Homeowners dog "Buffy" After. Thought it would loosen tree up enough to fall off, but didnt. 36" DBH. There were several rounds already there that i had sectioned (Isocore & noodling) to load. Wood went next door to my friends hence the open tailboard. Staged rounds before. After. My friend gave me more storage way in his back yard into the woods. Only issue is his yard gets very squishy when wet so once it is i wont be able to drive back there. Oak, hickory, and other "long term" woods have been brought there. If ground freezes in Winter ill bring more in. For now at least i can SS there.
How long until you are out of room at your friend's? Doesn't seem like it should take long the way you go at it!
The wood i have there is in his front yard in a wooded area....20-25 cord. I was running out of room and he offered up an area in his back woods, which i initially declined, but after more thought i said yes, that is cleared and i can drive into...basically a circular flat area. This resulted from this oak. Some of the "front" yard wood is year old oak (white & red) and hickory i had stacked too tightly and found it getting moldy . I was in a pinch a year ago and stacked it without giving it much thought. Most has got moved to the back and getting restacked. (groan) I decided to store the long term wood in back. Im guessing ill store at least ten cord back there. Up to 7-8 already. I can pull in okay but have to do multiple K turns to get out. His back yard gets squishy as the water table is high so once it does i wont be able to bring more wood in until and if it freezes solid. Most of the time ive been splitting here and moving it elsewhere. This way here ill do it right away rather than out of sight out of mind. Spoke to the landlord here and may be able to start putting wood down below in my original area again as its been slowly getting sold.
I bucked until i got to the two small trees it was wedged in. Thought one limb was the trigger and cut it off and no go. Felled one of the spars...small pin oak. Bucked the biggest limb by under cutting and it still wouldnt let go. Its a small embankment into a drainage ditch so an awkward spot to work. Ill had the big saw (460) with me with longer bar but was tired and limited time so opted to try another day. The broken part is maybe 8' off the ground. Hollow inside.
Fired up the 460 today wearing the 28" bar. First time since mid August. Bucked more of the trunk. Saw bound once and dulled cutting through the compost in the center. Trunk in drainage culvert was too muddy after a rainy week so i quit. Felt good to run the big saw again. It'll wear the 36" bar to finish up...maybe next week.
That's some good progress. At least you won't have to move it, it's in your new stacking area, right?
Not really progress, only cut for a short time yesterday. Im bringing it next door to my friends. Keeping longer seasoning wood way in back. The drainage culvert leads right to my stacks in his front yard Now with all the rain i may not be able to until ground freezes up. Ill process on the spot and leave splits until it can be moved. This guy is great. 25 year old "kid". He has offered wood storage in an old unused shed in the back plus has no problem with wood being there. Ive started alterations and repairs. He has five red maples in front he wants cut down so those will go in there. One from Isaias already CSS in his back yard close to where it fell will get moved to that "new" shed when ready. His back yard is mushy in the cold weather so another obstacle i have to overcome
We'll hope for a hard freeze then, so you can get it all in place. Sounds like a nice cooperative arrangement.
