Snowing lightly even though it is saturated with moisture. Ended up scraping the deck after the walk. Roads are clear but wet. 32f now.
Foe sure! It all helps yet sometimes these wild swings get hard to take. Soon though we will stay more on the chilly side. Have fun.
Got a hard freeze last night. 16 degrees here right now. Currently burning some random cookies and shorties. Supposed to get some snow this weekend
Another fine Fall day here. 71ºF according to the weatherguessers, 73ºF in my back yard. Sunny. No wind. Leaves occasionally slowly spinning to the ground .
Had lots of rain both yesterday and today. More on the way. Not as warm as predicted but still very warm (mid 60's) for this time of year.
Dennis is making a winter coat from chipminks ? What's next ? Just a damp, cloudy day Downeast. When the wind dies, it's time to take in the mooring and put out the winter pole in the cove. We use trees to make thick poles that ice can't destroy like an inflated mooring ball. The mooring chain is fastened onto a hole in the pole. It's usually a PITA since the thick shackles can be tough to undo. Woe.
average temp is 55 and 35 at night. We have been below average for 8 days now, along with 6 inch's of snow 3 days ago then a snow mix the last 2 days. Been burning a mix of oak and maple.
It's been nice here all day but a little breezy. I moved the last of the wood for this season from over in the drying area to the woodshed by the house and into the basement racks. It was probably the last good day to do it while the wood is still nice and dry and not freezing cold. The temperature is supposed to drop from 72* down into the 40's this evening so I'll probably light a fire in the basement before going to bed. I'm glad we got the wood into the basement racks so I'm not wasting BTU's on warming up cold wet wood in those racks. There's almost a cord in those 2 racks and they last us 15 days each. It just started raining as we finished up cleaning out the truck and getting everything put away. I couldn't have gotten it done without my favorite helper. She's a keeper for sure. Woodshed and racks are all full for this heating season. Quite a variety this year, Ash, Sugar Maple, Cherry, Ironwood, Honey Locust, Beech, Pin Oak, White Oak, Hawthorn, Elm, and a few others I'm probably not remembering... 5 cord in the outdoor shed and 1 in the basement so we're ready to go. We had burned some Ash last week for a few days during a cold snap but it warmed up the last couple days and we let it go out. Most of this wood was cut early summer in 2018 so I split and checked several pieces of each species to make sure we were below 20%. Under 18% was typical and after it sets in the basement racks for at least 15 days it will be really dry when it goes into the stove. The wood in the basement racks gets well over 90* and sometimes over 100* when we're cranking the stove during the really cold weather. There is always air flow through those racks as well as we use the furnace fan to circulate the heated air though the whole house.
Yes we are, thanks yooperdave! Im excited now that it is upon us. Im burning a full load of larch at -10c/14f right now. Roads are a mess.
Just enough snow overnight to notice that there was some tracks on the deck. I think maybe that "missing pet" of Rope is hanging around the U.P.!!!!!! 21f currently.
44 this morning cedar kindling getting things started. Ash going in next. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
23F this AM. Calm, crisp, and not a cloud in the sky. Beauty morning. If it could just stay like this! Stove is happily idling along. I'll get to it around noon.
Finally cold enough (39 °F) to cure the paint on my new Lopi Endeavor. Heat to 400 & hold for 45 minutes, then to 600 for another 45 minutes. I actually followed the instructions!
