Bucked 3/4 of the poplar before it stood back up. I'll fell it another day. This tree was under extreme pressure. The main trunk was wedged between 2 hickorys, when I finally sawed the one end, I stopped and used wedges and a long sledge hammer. The main trunk, all 50' went one way (away from me as planned) about 8', and the end I was bucking flew around 12', again, I was back pretty far, full ppe. Below is what I got cut today and split. I'm about half way done what's on the ground. Everything still needs to get transported back a short ways to the stacking area. Dog tired!
How many weeks...... at least 3 spending an hour or two after work and alittle time during the weekend. Not pictured is a med sized hard maple that needed to be dropped.
In the stack, the rounds weren't as accurate being on a 12' ladder yesterday. Just wanted to get them down. I may cut more later, but likely it will be in the morning. My body hurts.
It is really fun cutting up something that lays like that first picture. Not trying to criticize at all but in the long run you'll save a lot of work and hastle by cutting a few of them a bit closer. I'm speaking of the ones circled below but there are a couple others. Those are a bear to handle once cut and they don't stack worth a hoot either. But if they are cut flush to the main trunk while still attached, it makes things go a lot easier.
That situation where the cut caused the main to move away and the other in a different direction sounds scary. But you obviously know what you're doing, so GOOD JOB! The tree looks like a monster.
Gark, it was a monster. The point where the branches vee'd out from the trunk about 50 ft up from the root was at 22" and down by the base it was just shy of 32". I got a ton of rounds from the thing and im only half way there.
Ill be heading out in a few to continue this tree. It will be hotter today so done late morning is the plan.
Well, done for the day. I'd so so far close to 2 cords. Double that rest of the trunk, which since it stood back up, roughly 20ft, I'll mess with that another time. I have plenty of poplar and I'd like to continue with the oak that is down.
Good point Dennis. I take the time to cut them in a good flush line with the trunk. they split better, less uglies Nice looking woods , I bet it's a lot cooler under the canopy You are getting a great variety of wood types Great pictures, keep them coming Have fun splitting the big ones, they should make nice big , straight splits
Yea...... I know I know......... its next on my list. Seriously though, Dawn and i put it into high gear today. I quartered everything while she took loads out. Storms mon-wed, thurs/friday scrub house and powerwash. Sat/Sun prep and paint house- hoping to get it done. After that oak will get done finally. Theres still a cherry and a tree pretty far back ill need id. Rest of today, wash grizzly, eat, and kickback.
Always something to do. Good thing too, or we would be getting lazy. Just have to take short breaks and enjoy the results on a regular basis. Nice work W.S.
We'll forgive, only cause it's poplar. Your pics bring back memories of the PA woods. Big trees , lots of variety & able to walk & see . Here under the trees is thick brush, hard to walk thru, lot smaller trees. Spruce & birch & some aspen
