Im doing this kindling thing all wrong. I just make kindling as I need it. Usually a couple days worth. Take some thinner splits and use the cracker. (Its worth the cost IMO) or I just go gather some of the trillion twigs I have.

When I first started burning a few years back I did the same - gathered twigs and cut up branches that I trimmed....But I found that to be too inefficient and somehow I'd always run out of twigs.........and the thin branches didn't dry very well because they were never split.......So now I feel much better - I can use two fistfuls of kindling and not feel guilty for one second! And I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna run out in any one season no matter how many fires I start!

Fired up the stove in VT tonight to take the chill off. Using the kindling! Nice pops from the Hemlock.

Looks good! I was thinking of grabbing some pine branches from up back. Lots of dry dead ones laying on the forest floor.

    Thanks for sharing!

And also good to know about burning and sifting buZZsaw BRAD - I just cleaned out my wood stove and there were left over nails in the ashes that we pulled out before getting them into the ash vac.
