I’m thinking that most of these are pretty much universal. Is there any brand that you wouldn’t recommend? Or a certain brand that you would?

Very pleased with TR Industries. It comes with interchangeable clear plastic face shield. Face shield and ear muffs can rotate out of the way.
Got it for reasonable price from either amazon or ebay. [IMG]

I have a Stihl one. I think I've had it for about 9+ years? Works great and it's held up really well. I use it any time I use the saw.

I have a Pfanner Protos, it’s definitely made for professionals and priced as such, but it is very comfortable. The hearing protection and face shield work well.

I've got one of these. 1.jpg

Not expensive, and it's already something I wear every time I start a saw up.

    • Petzel and Kask make nice helmets too, but much more expensive than the one you picked up.

I have a stihl one. Works well. I forgot to put the ear muffs down the other day when I started my 660 :bug: holy cow! I forgot how loud it is. I can’t believe I ever ran ran a saw without muffs!

I like the 3M/Peltor muffs. They seem to be the most comfortable for my head.

I was very unsatisfied with the $50 Husqvarna helmet. The basic one, not the forestry one for $125. The ear cub mechanism kept popping off and this is a common problem. Nothing appeared broken and I would never toss the helmet.

It was becoming a hazard because the helmet would suddenly swing around my head as the cup popped off and block my vision. Not something you want when operating a chainsaw.

I ended up getting the Planner Protos helmet which is unbelievable. Super comfortable, rear vent you can open and close, magnetic clasp, much higher quality mesh, ear cups that actually retract into the helmet and out of the way
    ....

Quite a bit more expensive at $310. FYI the colors for this helmet are just stickers, not paint. I wear a size 8 hat and was concerned it would be too small. It just fits and I mean just.

Also the husqvarna forestry helmet at $125 uses the same ear cup swivel mechanism so the same problem would arise. Never again!
