Every year I seem to have at least some evidence of powder post beetles. You know, bunch of dusty wood,. It’s definitely not uncommon for me to see what looks like new dust even though my wood stacks are dry. To confirm, I do split the word here and there to check moisture content and Consistently below 20%. This year I seem to be noticing it fairly heavy in the one particular area Of the stack I started taking from to put up that wood up on the porch on a rack on the front porch, as I do every year. I know these are common, but I’m curious to see if other people deal with these things as part of their normal every day dealing with dry seasoned firewood.
I get them in red maple stacks . They likely live in the dead branches of living red maple trees of which we have a lot of so there's probably not much purpose to trying to kill them, but I won't store the red maple firewood indoors, at least not for too many days. I think I've seen them in red oak but not in the stacks, just while splitting some rounds.
I don't get too upset about pp bettles but I have some hickory that the wood bees decided they liked the holes the the hickory borers left and they come out if in by the stove for a day.
Beetles also seem to like Hickory. Like Dennis said, all part of the fun. Not much you can do about it, other than kiln dry your wood.
We see the dust every now and then. It's bound to happen sooner or later. We only bring wood into the house as needed, so we do not worry about them. When the wood comes into the house, the little critters are minutes away from the crematory!
