Been working on the woodyard. Finally got some more pics to prove it... Started out getting the rest of the elm we had CSS, had a small catalpa in the mix Then had some bigger logs to work up. A nice catalpa and some black gum. I split some of the smaller gum, shouldn't have a problem with air going through that stack......after a few rounds, I heard some bugs, grubs and worms needed new living quarters, so I donated to the cause...1 of 3 buckets... Got the elm, catalpa and gum stacked next to the hickory. Yesterday my hunny helped me cut a bunch of limb wood to size. Had a few big enough to split. The biggest piece is dogwood. This is a mix of maple, oak, dogwood That makes 2 1/2 rows on that side.
Not yet. Had a couple days in the high 80's, but humidity was high. Glad I went to work today. High was 96 or so, Heat Index was 125°
I got fooled on this log. Had the white/silver bark and paper-like inner bark like poplar. It was some of the most twisted wood I've seen. Sliced/tore one round into firewood. That's when I decided the bugs/grubs could have it. Smaller black gum wasn't too bad.
Much...the elm we just split was no problem, had it long enough the bark was just coming loose. I think it was black gum, splitter stayed in slow speed all the way through. This was a smaller round of gum we split. And its shoulder season wood at best.
Guess it's time for an update, just so y'all know we alive down here. Got some more limb rounds and a soft maple log CSS in the calico shed Filled up the 2nd wire basket we had gotten, need to make a top of it. Moved all the 2 yr old tulip poplar to mama's shed, mix it in with some oak. Cleaned up the woodyard with the landscape rake, Miz Carol fell on some hickory bark and I got Got the splitter and canopy set up on the 1 cord shed, bucked up some logs WARNING...GRAPHIC... Didn't do the damage with the saw...log or tractor tire must have got it. Some kind of BIG rat with short tail... Making good progress on the shed, actually only have 1/2 row left to fill now. Cut a few more logs ups Some of this oak has some wild grain. Wish TurboDiesel could get a few pieces for bowls. We got a big box of kindling scraps from the hickory and elm
I had to split from the outside in on the last big blackgum I had. like peeling layers off. That’s a nice level wood yard and setup.
Just adding a few pictures of our work lately. We have been blessed with some big wood recently. I shared some on another thread, some are new. We got to clean up this big Post Oak last week, got 5 dump trailer loads from it. It fell across the road and hit the green house, luckily only minimal damage. He didn't make it. The church needed help with the big wood that was left, another member was getting the smaller rounds. We went Thursday and helped them out. Got 2 more trailer loads, oak and a pecan tree. Breaking down the pecan top to fit on trailer. The 2 loads of oak and pecan. 1st load 2nd load Got some major noodlin' to do on some of this. Those big ol knots will burn a long time.
That is a great pic of you, knee-deep in sawdust! You left the house with the post oak looking nice and neat, but what does your own yard look like now? Piles everywhere I bet.
WOW! Some serious wood! My back cringes at big wood. Im sure that 461 was smiling when it saw (no pun intended) that wood! Im sure you were too at the thought of using it!
I have strict orders about NO WOOD going in the yard. If the processing area gets full, I'll have to put it in our field.
