Hey all- i have a bunch of dead trees on a property i just bought. The woods solid, not spongey, and appears to be in good shape for burning. I'm a bit confused about what it is though, as i'm a bit of a newby when comes to wood identification. If anyone can help me id this stuff i'd really appreciate it. These trees are about 50-80 feet high. The property (78 acres ) consists of mostly sugar maple, red maple, cherry and some beech and lies in central ny on the west edge of the catskills. I kinda thought so- i have about 15 more like this one to take down then..i guess i better get them down and split before they rot...thanks
Welcome to the forum pitbill. Yep Ash is great wood. Some folks say it’ll last awhile dead like that but in my limited experience I’d get it cut and stacked as soon as possible..

I guessed Ash as well without looking at the other responses. Is that green or black ash anyone know? Perhaps black? Isn't the bark of white ash more....white?
Funny you mention that. Yesterday I took a break on a small stack of logs in my processing area. Was looking at them and realized I didn’t know what they were anymore. Dark bark that made me think of oak but there’s no reason I would have separated oak. The butt cuts were no help beyond knowing it wasn’t oak. Then I finally remembered it was a lone ash my mom had cut down in one of her gardens. All that to say sometimes ash bark darkens with age,,,at least after being cut.
Welcome to the forum pitbill Yes, ash is great firewood and yes, it is good to get it cut, split and stacked, but you don't have to be in a super hurry. We cut dead ash for several years before it started to go south. Sadly, what we have left is now woodpecker food. The nice part is that with what you have it could get you on the 3 year plan very quickly!

Got up this morning, cut it all up and split it...now i gotta stack it.....tomorrow i'll drop 2 more....im getting too old for this stuff......thanks for all the help guys, i've been a lurker on this site for a while now, i figured it was time to join up
Welcome to the club. Lots of great folks here sharing knowledge and humor. Your not to old for this, about the same age as me, plus you have a tractor and splitter like us. Good job on getting it dropped and split. Be extra careful with those dead trees...we dont need ya
