So excited to reap the fruits of my labor of love for the past year. I have learned so much and definitely made some mistakes along the way.

39 F outside, 66 inside when I started the fireplace up.

I haven't lit my stove yet. We did have a fire in the fireplace at my parents house over the weekend.

We've had several and no matter how many years we've heated with wood, it is still a pleasure to feel the heat from a good wood stove!

First Fire last night myself. Had all the windows wide open for a couple of 45 degree nights. Enough is enough. Close em and grab some pine. As Dennis said, it’s nice.

Well wouldn't you know I have 3 kids at home doing remote schooling......I walked in to the oldest's bedroom and she had the heat pump on AND a little electric heater under her desk.......

    And......

She was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and no socks. She's 12. She should know better....especially since I announced I was starting the fire.....

I almost decapitated her on the spot. Once school is over there's going to be a big can o' whoop*ss coming out.......

No fires here yet, but we are ready to go. The temperatures have been like a yo yo, and now it's going to be near 80 this week. Well, tomorrow is the first day of fall. Time will tell.

No, not at all. I say that because I become a slave to the stove!

I hate summer! Humidity in the swamp is not fun, my least favorite time of the year.

It's been eons since I've been in a house with a roaring fire inside a fireplace. How well does it keep the house warm? I work with a guy that swears his house gets colder when he burns inside (it's a modern house, not drafty) so maybe he's just blowing smoke...

As a mason I built a nice big fireplace in my house. The heat will drive you right out. Problem is when you go to sleep it’ll freeze your butt off. Like leaving the front door open.

Makes sense that all the heat would go right up the chimney once the fuel's gone. Hence why you've got a stove in there now? That and not having to worry about flying embers :hair: Must be nice to be able to put your masonry skills to use in your own home. Definitely a good craft to know.

Well at least I knew that going into it LOL
The fireplace is great for ambience. Used to have a crane in there with a bbq rack hanging from chains. Cook over an open fire really got the women warm. But all in all they’re not that great for heating the house. They’ll heat that area but not the entire house. Great for parties. Masonry heaters maybe different, never built one.
Even with the fireplace ripping the second floor master bedroom froze. And that’s with a double air intake system.

My house is not an open concept so lots of rooms, lots of 90 degree turns, so I know that getting the entire floor is not possible. That said, it really does an extremely good job of warming up the living room and the dining room. I have the two rooms reversed.

If I leave the door to the 2nd floor open on top, the heat will travel up there eventually.

Also, because of the grate that I have (High Efficiency Fireplace Grates | Grate Wall Of Fire) it is a vertical gravity feed upside down fire I build....and not only is it easy to maintain but combinerd with the 1/2" reflective back steel plate, it really retains heat and creates an amazing bed of embers.

It's not going to compare to a full on stove - I get it - but it's also light years ahead of a "traditional" fireplace grate where all the heat just goes up the chimney.

I convinced only one of my neighbors to get it.....and he couldn't believe what a difference it made in heating the space.....that it can heat......

I think I also said this earlier - I have another neighbor with an insert and he doesn't really run it that much because his wife says it gets their living room unbearably hot.......Similar closed concept house......
