I believe one sign of a firewood hoarder is having firewood that is too nice to burn. The wood in the rack has been there for 3 years now, and it was among some of the first free wood scores I got. 20200915_182620.jpg The next pick is what I believe is hard or sugar maple. Holding on to it for cooking caveman steaks in the stove. 20200915_182724.jpg

When tossing a stick into the fire I sometimes remember when I cut the tree down, or split it.
It is rare that I get black locust, so when I come across a split I can remember exactly where it’s from. There is some wood I consider primo, but eventually all my work gets burned. Still amazed that all that wood gets reduced to such a small pile of ash.

I only got one score of locust 2 years ago. About 8 trucks, or 3 cords worth. I remember that one. it was all cut too long. Almost everything else I have is almost a blur on where I got it from.

I still haven’t scored any Black Locust. I do have a couple lines out and that may be changing pretty soon though.

That’s some high quality wood for sure. I’d leave some more room between the wood and stove.

I have been told that many times before. The side of the stove does not get above 150 degrees. I have measured it with the stove going full bore. I have been thinking about getting a piece of cement board to add some extra there.

I was going to ask you about that. Is there just none in your area or a rare tree available to scrounge? For me it was a rare tree to scrounge, but i think my persistance paid off. A couple back to back bad storms have really helped too!

Same here it's like my white whale...........I always have my eye out for it but I just don't see it much around these parts. Maple, Oak, Pine rule my area for the most part with a bit of Cherry. Although I stopped burning the Cherry I have and set aside for smoking only till I score some more.

Been getting closer to my 3 and eventually 5 year plan. Right now I am good for 20/21 and 21/22. I have about 10 huge ash that need to come down this year, that will be good for 22/23. Then count in my hoarding of free wood, I think I am doing pretty good.
