Welcome to FHC. You'll like it here. We do like beer, dogs and pics. You got the pics down pretty good. As others suggested, leave the oak till last as you want the faster drying wood done 1st. If you test older split. Split again and then test the center of it. Are you splitting by hand? Show us some of your other tools and equipment. How about your stove?
On the plus side, you have a ton split and once you get to the magical 3 year plan you can sit back and coast as you will only need to process one season worth. Keep the oak and maybe the locust separate so you don't waste the BTU's trying to burn it wet. There used to be a chart on here to show drying times, but I can not locate it at the moment. Maybe Dennis Backwoods Savage has the link. Great place you have.
Here’s a pic of my dog (Leo) and one of my cats (Sayuri) enjoying the warmth of my Osburn Wood Stove Insert. They love it!
thank you! I absolutely love my place. I got very lucky getting it. It’s an old farm house with a 40x75 pole barn and 30x65 redwood barn. The neighborhood was under development and the developer had the entire three acres for sale in hopes that no one would buy it so they could tear everything down and build another house and sell it. I took a walk around the house and immediately fell in love with it. I’ll post some pics soon if the rest of the place and tools and such. No one else in the entire neighborhood has shade trees like I do
Firewood BTU & Drying Chart Some of this is questionable but it still can be used as a rough guide. But then if one gets on the 3 year plan, there are no worries about if the wood is dry or not. Here is some more good information. Primer on Woodburning by Backwoods Savage And welcome to the forum Donald Stamper
I got my moisture meter today and I’m so excited. I have prob 4 cords of wood with content below 20% and more seasoned rounds in the pile! Here are some pics!
Great, that's the same meter we have. Did you re-split a piece and check the fresh side? If you did and got those readings, you have some great wood.
i did ! Several pieces. Some were much higher and some were just slightly. I have so much fresh wood I’m scared that I won’t have any ready for January, when it starts to get real cold. I prob have 2 cords or better seasoned real nice fingers crossed. Guys I’m guessing I have 20 cords sitting unsplit at this point!! I’m gonna hammer threw it so by next year I’ll be good to go!!! Love this website man!!
Was any of that oak? If so save that for January and February. When you start splitting, split them smaller than you normally would. They'll dry out quicker.
Here is what I have. I'm not sure how many cords, maybe 2-3 if it was all cut. I chop it pretty slowly and collect from around the neighborhood after storms. I primarily use the wood in the grill you see there.
I usually grill once a week to eat on for the week. I will burn some extra just for fun but this should last a while. We have had some big wind storms in the last few years where I was picking up wood every day on my way home from work. I just cannot pass anything up though if I find a good pile on the curb.....
It's fun to make something from nothing! Can always give firewood away to friends. I used to grill for the week too, before my husband got a nutribullet.
Welcome to the club. Lots of great folks here sharing knowledge and humor. That's some good cooking rigbt there.
