Howdy RGrant. Pleased to make your acquaintance. I think I’ll leave the air on till the highs are in the 50’s
Same here. I have a stove full of silver maple and more than enough old bills to get them started. We haven't needed the fire yet because my wife has been making soups, and zucchini bread, and other things in the oven and stove top to keep the house warm. Still 69° inside. 49° side and that should be the lowest it goes out there before temps start slowly going back up.
I am simply amazed when reading how many folks have to use air conditioning for so long every year. Believe it or not we never had air conditioning until the late 80's. Also we averaged 5-10 days per year running those things. This year has been the most we've ever ran them but I can remember many years where we ran them less than 10 times. Even then we most times would run them during the day and shut them off at night. Of course this year has been unusual for us because of the neck brace I've had to wear 24 hours per day since July 6. I also recall just a few years ago (2016 I think) when the first day we turned on the air was September 21. That's more like it! There surely is a huge difference in the electric bill!
I never ran the AC much myself. Didn’t install it in the house when I built it. Have window units now. The big change for me was back when I was shooting rifles competitively. I learned, by trial and much error and listening to the rifles that accuracy can only be maintained if the bore of the rifle is consistent from shot to shot. Most shooters achieve this by cleaning the bore every 6-8 shots. The game I played required up to 100 rounds with little time for cleaning. Hence I searched for powder fouling conditions that remained consistent. During the humid summer months I witnessed that humidity really played havoc with the fouling ina rifle barrel. The AC kept the house dryer and that issue went away. I never looked back. Looking out the window right now as the light emerges I see we had another night of heavy fog. I just hate humidity.
Still running the A/C here. Weatherbug's forecast for yesterday was Very Hot and 85° We did see 46° in the mountains of Northern Pa this past weekend though. Had to fire the camper furnace up over night. It won't be long now till the first fire of the season. Probably in the next 3 weeks or so we'll want to take the chill off...
