8692281A-B6AC-4535-B899-38951697F2CB.jpeg Almost at the end of my state forest cutting permit privileges. Got a pickup load of ash and white oak today. The oak was about 20-22” diameter so I had to hand split on site to get the piece sizes more manageable. The white oak is a good looking wood and does not have the smell of red oak.

Red Oak, especially if there is wet wood/decay in it can stink up the neighborhood.

White oak is my “favorite” oak. I usually don’t come across too much of it. There’s mostly red in my immediate area.
I have a couple cords of freshly CSS red oak smelling up my backyard right now. Even my wife was complaining about it. When I first bucked the tree, within hours the yellow jackets were going nuts all over the rounds. They must like the smell. Yuck. I just noticed mold forming on a few of the splits too. The stack got pretty drenched a few days ago. Almost time to top cover.

I'm one who likes the smell of red oak. Someone once told me it is because I grew up on a dairy farm and we also raised herford and angus steers. Needless to say, we were not strangers to forks and shovels...

When a Beer was named Red Oak, I said clearly they are people who have never smelled red oak.

Same here...I have only ever smelled a couple red oaks that I didn't think had a nice oaky sawdust smell to them...growing up we went to pick up a dump insert full of sawdust from the mill to be used for bedding every week.

Some nice wood Steve. Great when you can cut to your size. When does the permit expire?

Nice haul. I personally don't like to wait for oak to season but if you have the time and space then there's some real nice BTU's in white oak.
