Went to look at a chainsaw this afternoon and it happened to go into the tornado ravaged section of a couple towns. (mine included) On my way there i passed this. Wood piles all over. Did i see that right i said to myself? Paper birch aka white birch. Stopped and grabbed it on the way back. Only something i thought id get at the dump. First for me. The pine was from a storm downed tree. Looks like the homeowner across the street put the birch there. His yard trees blown over. Just rootballs remain. Not a problem if you're an opportunistic scrounger. A common sight in the area i went through. Wood all over. With the locust i scrounged yesterday. Rain today so didnt unload.
Nice stuff, I have a little of it in my stacks. Left alone, that stuff goes to full blown Johnny Rotten punk fast, great score!
Have you made or sold any? Just measured and the bigger logs 7-8" diameter. Guess i could cut them a foot long with four or six slots.
with those of us with inserts, the decorative splits are nice in the shoulder months, June thru September. Then a little fire starter and its the first lite of the season.
buZZsaw BRAD Have you unzipped the birch yet? If you are going to let it sit before blocking it up and splitting it, you should unzip the logs.
I made a chit ton of them with pine and didn’t sell any. Wife posted for sale on FB marketplace, no dice. Maybe when the cooler weather comes around I’ll try again. I see the white ones at the local grocery store for crazy money. Probably about 12” long.
I just cut mine at firewood length ( 16”) to me. Ash on the left cut this spring, tough to get started. American Elm in the middle, standing dead, fired right up Cherry on the right, cut 10 days ago, real PIA get going. No surprise there. I have made a few out of some 40+ year old hedge posts. They make great marshmallow & hot dog fires.

My wood stove had a large window in front. I put pieces of white birch in the stove to get rid of the black hole. Not much around here, though.
Wow that's an awesome find. Down here just north of NYC we got a lot of rain and the power blipped for a second......but I haven't seen any new downed trees driving around town......
Cut most of it into 14" lengths which worked for the logs i had with little waste. Cut an "X" in a couple and plunge cut another as the center was punky. Ill let it dry and clean it out. Want to experiment cutting the others. White birch cookies anyone?
i had a costumer come to get some ash for the fire ring. When he say I had a small stack of split birch he bought a few pieces to decorate the the indoor fireplace. His wife loved it
