Im lucky enough to be able to take pics with my cheesy digital camera, let alone video. If i do, i will post pics of course. Kinda wanna satisfy my own curiosity, but i feel the same about elm as you do Jason.
Brian, you are just doing it wrong. Besides, I'm sort of betting you make your wife do all the splitting.
This was one of the easiest elm I've ever had. Just for kicks I even split a couple by hand with a splitting maul. The rest was done with hydraulics and I recently posted a video of it.
I have been cutting dead elm to go directly into the wood shed. Oak is taking up space in the outside stacks. I need to get some drier wood in the shed for the 22-23 burning season.
That could absolutely be the case Dennis. ?? I only ran into one Elm tree, it was green and the rounds were far too large to move so I was trying to split them in place. What a nightmare! Ended up leaving most of the wood there and wished the owner (of both the property and the tree / rounds) the best of luck getting rid of that stuff. This was way back in the olden' days before anyone I knew had a splitter so that was just not an option. Could be that I just ran into a nasty species? We do not see much elm here anyway and I have not seen any down but not processed since. We are more of a maple and oak state which works pretty well for me. Brian
For sure if elm is not dead with most of the bark off, I'll leave it. Hope you two are doing well. Is the house finished?
Dead standing elm is awesome for this purpose. I try to add elm like this to my stacks every year. It's going to get a whole lot easier once my wood shed is completed.
Yeah, the elm I ran into was only down weeks and was alive before being driven over in a windstorm. Truly nasty stuff. My very first, and so far last, introduction to that species. Thanks for the kind thoughts Dennis, I hope all is well with you and yours also! We are all doing great here. None of the things seen on the news are happening here so it is life as usual.... No house is not done yet. Still trying to round up contractors. Covid seems to have pushed home improvement projects forward leaving a shortage of both materials and contractors. Sheesh. Just what we needed..... But the house is dry, weatherproof and reasonable to live in other than the shortage of room so no real complaints from us; things can, and often do, get worse so we are holding in our complaints for a time when we may need them. Brian
I picked up some straight dead elm today. I don't think it will be too bad. My neighbor across the street hired someone who dropped it in the road with a battery pole saw, narrowly missing a passing car. They took it to the dump, and I took it back from the dump. I've been eyeing that tree for years.
THAT is exactly the 'woven fiber wood' that I think of as Elm. Try that stuff on with wedges and a hammer- all you get is buried wedges and tired. That stuff looks snotty even with a hydraulic splitter. Brian
'Nuff said It's the food truck grease guy isn't it? Kinda funny. I picture you watching. and "tailing" them to the dump.. They be like.. "I think someone's following us"
