Gave the ol' RedWing 4404 boots some mink oil today. Yes sir. Also got a load of honey locust from a tree service guy. Given that it was bucked a bit too short for my liking my buddy is going to take most of it. I might keep a piece or two of the longer ones.
Good on you for treating those boots. Not so good on giving that wood away though. Short stuff will still burn and when you get that good of a firewood, I'd happily burn it. I remember one year we burned nothing but short stuff until almost Christmas time. Works nice until the real cold comes in but even then locust could keep you plenty warm even in January.
Haha I gave it away to my buddy who has about 6 cord of wood. I have 35 or so now.....so sharing the love. Plus I have no more room on .55 acre to store it so it's fine by me. The tree service that gave me the locust is coming by again (probably today) with a load of red oak. Not only did I give it to my buddy I took two trips in my tacoma and dropped it off in his driveway 20 miles away. I got a nice cup of coffee and many thanks in return. Even trade if you ask me. By the time I came back with the second load he had already split the first load completely and had a huge grin on his face. After splitting some beech and green spruce this was like chopping butter hahahaha.
I also have way more shorties and uglies than I need. For the most part each stack's center is filled with them. I give away the cutoffs now to a neighbor 2 blocks away because he only has an outdoor firepit. He's doing me a favor by taking the wood. I also still have a dozen rounds of spruce I need to process into kindling so I'm up to my eyeballs in shorties.
Snapped a pic of the honey locust sitting on top of my pile of black locust. The honey is way more yellow, n'est-ce pas? It's also at 27% MC so probably won't be ready for this year.
