I live half way between Houston and Beaumont Texas, and I am watching closely the paths of the two hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. Parts of Southeast Texas are in a mandatory evacuation order with schools closing, nursing homes being evacuated and some critical care hospital patients being relocated.

Tropical Storm Marco, which has lost strength after making landfall still has the potential for possible storm surges along the costal communities. I was lucky with TS Marco and received no wind or rain in my area. But that doesn't appear to be the case with Hurricane Laura. Laura became a hurricane early Tuesday morning and is now on track to make landfall in Louisiana and Texas by late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Hurricane Laura has already hit Puerto Rico, Cuba and Hispaniola with heavy rainfall. I am hoping for the best...but preparing for the worst. I will be glued to the Weather Channel for up to date reports on Hurricane Laura over the next few days..... things are starting to concern me....time will tell.

    Thanks Eric,

I have been prepping my house, barn and animals for the last two days, high winds will be my major concern. Hurricane Laura is moving fast enough that I hope it moves thru my area with minimal flooding. Three years ago on Aug.29, 2017 with Hurricane Harvey , I had 52 inches of rising water flooding inside my house for seven days and no electrical power for 14 days....what a mess! I hope I never experience another hurricane like Harvey. :hair:

Beaumont Texas just declared a mandatory evacuation order, its starting to get serious. Beaumont has a population of over 100,000 citizens so this will take some time to get everyone to safety. I live 51 miles west of Beaumont.

Stay safe Knothead! Im guessing since you said you have animals you were prepping, that you probably won't leave, unless you think it's gonna be real bad...

Thanks for the kind thoughts Eckie, the remnants of Hurricane Laura may be passing thru your state of Virginia on Saturday, check out the map below.

I will be riding out Hurricane Laura here in my home which is located in East Texas mainly because of my cows and horses. I live in the middle of the "East Texas Piney Woods" and trees falling on my fence rolls is always a large concern during hurricanes. I have lived here for the last 25 years and I would never leave my animals during one of these events. .... too many bad things can happen to them. Once Laura has pasted thru I will evaluate the storm damage and make a decision to stay home (probably without electrical power) or take a road trip until conditions get back to normal.

The latest tracking on Laura seems to be looking a little better for my location but worse for the people toward the east, near the Texas/Louisiana border. On the downside Laura's winds are expected to be greater that 120MPH during landfall. The next 24 hours will tell the tale.

Looks like Laura will be making landfall later tonight/early morning as a Cat 4, currently a Cat 3, was "rapidly intensifying" over the Gulf of Mexico early Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said. It warned of potentially catastrophic and life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds, and flash flooding Wednesday night along the northwest Gulf Coast.

Knothead , yrah looks like it will.come over us, hopefully just a small rain event by then. I know what you mean about animals, we have the same, with plenty of trees along fence rows to cause problems. We're 2ish hours from ocean, which is way too close for my comfort when a hurricane's coming our way. I see Backwoods Savage's post...I didn't know they were talking about it being a 4, last i saw maybe a 3.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I've been glued to the Weather Channel all afternoon for the latest reports on Laura. Looks like Lake Charles La. will be taking the biggest hit from the hurricane around midnight tonight. My area should receive winds of 50-60 MPH with minimum flooding which I am very thankful to hear. Short of the normal unpredictable tornado activity associated with all hurricanes I hope this night goes smoothly. I do pray for the people east of me, I think it will be devastating for far East Texas and Western Louisiana residents who did not evacuate.

Thanks Eckie and everyone here at FHC for your thoughts and prayers during this hurricane. Hurricane Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana just a few minutes ago.
The storm is expected to move inland across southwestern Louisiana over the coming hours, then head north across the state on Thursday afternoon. The center of the storm will then move over Arkansas and the mid-Mississippi Valley on Friday, then reach the mid-Atlantic states by Saturday. Basically for me.....the worst is over.

I feel like I am the luckiest guy on the planet right now. I received very little wind gust, very little rain, no electrical power loss and no tornadoes.....thank you Lord!

I do pray for all the people east of me and those in the path of Hurricane Laura. This hurricane will go down in the history books for sure. :BrianK:
