I had this big dead ash in my fencerow but was in no hurry to drop it because of all the other wood that's been coming my way. Something didn't look right so me and the 261 took a ride. It just missed my neighbors grain head. Need the bigger saw and longer chain to drag it over on my side.
Why is not the 261 big enough? It can handle a lot. Shoot, people were always amazed with what I cut even with a 290.
That broken end was 22" across. Only have 18" on the 261. Like they say in TX. Bigger is better. My 290 saw a lot of big wood action before CAD struck.
Well, that is no reason to not use the 261. The bar does not have to be as large as the diameter of the log. Shoot, I've cut many 30" and up to 32" trees with a 290 using a 16" bar; not a problem at all and no, I do not cut some from one side then go to the other side. I cut all from the same side. Simple and easy. I remember when logging many times not using anything more than a 25" or 28" bar; no problem.
Do not have to cut from both sides. Stay on one side of the log and it will do just fine. In Steve's case he could easily use a 16" bar. One can also remember that with a shorter bar, you get more power from the saw so you really don't lose anything by using a short bar.
True a larger saw in not needed. But if he has one I see no real reason not to. big saws make quick work if set up right, the reach so you don't have to bend over is also a plus. Run whatever you want to.
It's an 1127 series saw, just like the others. But, the 029super has more power than the 290, despite the same CC's. All of these series saws really wake up with a muffler mod, so I hear. These are all held back with a restrictive muffler. I do like the quietness of the 029s compared to the wail of my dolkita. That thing is loud. My dad bought it new in 2000. Or was it 99? I went with him to buy it. It's mine now though. I used it the other day to cut up a down ash branch. I started it up after it sat for a couple years the other week. Fresh gas and 10-15 pulls and it was running like new.
You are right about the muffler mods Horkn and the best guy I know for doing the mods is huskihl and he's done lots.
I'm a HUGE fan of Muffler Mods. Easy, low cost method of getting some added performance and also letting the saw run a tad cooler from what I understand. I know they made nice differences on my saws.
The other half of the ash came down last night. I had been hoping a good wind would take it down but it didn't happen the other night but I guess the wind weakened it enough for gravity to help. It did take out a little bit of my Indian corn. Looks like more cutting in the heat.
From the looks of that trunk i’ld much rather have the wind take it down rather than put a chain to it and then have to run.
I have it marked where the barbed wire is.It is actually pretty solid but I'm glad it came down the way it did.
Figured mid 70's temps wood be good for cleaning this tree up. WRONG!T-shirt is soaked. Needed to get it out of the way as it was interfering with me spraying the Indian corn. Just about a 1/2 cord. 261 and 462 got the call.
