We have had this bird hunting in our area since spring. Always alone, always quiet. We have had hawks in the area for years. Always screeching.
But the other day actually had 4. This is probably the pic we have been able to get.

Turkey vultures. We call them "eye pluckers". If the children don't behave, the eye pluckers come out.

Next time you come here please feel free to take all you want. I went across the sand yesterday and scared 8 of them out of there roosts. Some were eating on the woodchucks we had fed them. They actually are not bad to have around as they keep the road kill cleaned up.

Cool morning again, but I feel groggy. Too bad I can't drink coffee any more.

Chazsbetterhalf Did the bird have a V shape to it? You have to get a front view to determine that. If it is V shaped, then it is a turkey vulture. If wings are out straight, then it would be a hawk.

That is the best pic we have been able to get. Has not screeched once in the whole time. We have had hawks nesting on our property for years. When they are up there hunting you always hear them screeching. Also with the hawks, they do fly low enough you can see the brown feathers on the wings. These birds are just black. We know that the turkey vulture will be in groups. Except for the other day it has been a single bird.

I had a turkey vulture right outside the front door chomping on part of what must have been a rabbit. I only went out because I thought it was a turkey and couldn't figure out WTF it was doing. As soon as it took off and soared/flew and saw that wing span there was no mistaking it for what it was. They're not all that common around here and the only other time I saw one it was in a group of a couple/few picking apart something on the side of the highway a couple towns over. Now in Texas ...

They are vultures from that pic, and not Hawks. You can see the lighter color on the wings which is telltale vulture.

Welp.... I finally broke down and ordered myself a wood splitter tonight. Should be delivered next Friday. I've been eyeing the County Line 25 ton sold at TSC. After reading a lot of the feedback on here about them, and a few other reviews by owners, I went for it. All this 30" red oak piling up in my backyard pushed me over the edge. It's a long-term investment and I have yet to meet someone that laments about the time they put their maul down and bought a splitter.

Thanks. It was more of a struggle justifying it to myself than with my wife :)
