Another shorty bin Another bin of chunks and uglies. We started out with 55 gal drums for uglies/chunkie storage. We have 25 of these. Hard to get free drums now, so pallet bin idea can along. Hope I can continue to get the metal bins, they are the best solution.
It is heavy, probably 150# or so empty, takes 2 to tote it...lol...have you ever found the big dog crates. They are pretty heavy built
I have one big one. It looks to be slightly heavier gauge wire. I scrounge them, so beggars can't be choosers.
Got the 1st metal bin full today. Can probably get a few more pieces in it. Not bad from 5 cords processed. The next bin at the OPE shop should be empty soon.
Never got a pic of it, but I made a 6' X 12' corral out of steel wire remesh. I bought a 150' roll from Lowes to make a ton of tomato cages. I lined the floor with pallets. Six large yard trees made almost two cords of uglies. Can’t make stacks like This from yard trees without uglies as a byproduct.
Thats a thing of beauty...almost so a hoarder like myself would almost get into an accident if i happen to drive by it! (i know from experience)
Thanks. That was at my old house. Corner lot, no fence, so I made a "free" one out of firewood. Gave us more privacy and got a bunch of compliments from non-burning neighbors. The fence was up for 1.5 years then I sold all of it in two weeks because I was moving and had my one years worth already squirreled away. My Tacoma made many trips hauling 1/3 of a cord at a time. All deliveries were within a mile of my house so the bed was heaping and the leaf springs were weeping. Pics of the other side of the yard and dismantling.
That’s a great idea! I volunteer at a local animal shelter. The dog crates get used hard and eventually get chucked in the dumpster when they start being unsafe for the dogs. I think I just found a use for them.
The misses and I are watering the neighbor's plants and feeding their cat while they are out of town. I noticed this in their garage. They are using an old baby crib to store a small dry supply of firewood. This would also be a good way to store shorties and cookies. I did ask my neighbor if I could put this pic on here before I posted it. He was excited about it being on here.
Haven't had any luck finding IBC totes for a reasonable price up here in the middle of nowhere so I'll just make my own ugly bins out of pallets. I can get all the pallets I want for free so cost-wise, it works for me. Made this one earlier today and already filled it up while splitting. I'll make another one tomorrow.
That looks nice. I have built a couple from plastic pallets. Are you using double pallets on the bottom to make it easier to move or fastening other pallets to it?
Right now it's not attached. The bottom pallet was an extra (with a broken slat) so I just threw it underneath to give a little more leverage when picking up the bin with the tractor. After filling the bin, I'm thinking I like having the extra pallet underneath to give it a few more inches of air flow and keeping the wood farther from the ground. Since the pallets are free, I'll probably keep the extra bottom pallet. I saw a pic of one of your plastic pallet bins and it definitely looks durable. I like the idea of the plastic pallets however in all the years of scrounging pallets I've only ever scored one that was plastic.
Thanks. 30" between each stack to allow for a wheelbarrow. Love that gray patina splits get after drying in the sun for over a year. Going to be some nice fires in the wood stove this winter.
I wish the plastic bins were able to be moved. I had to drive pipe in the ground to hold sides/attach straps too. And I don't know if our tractor would pick a full one up.
