I don't know much about old VWs, but an engine is an engine. How did you adjust the carb? Using an exhaust analyzer is the best way. Is the timing correct? Points good? Dwell?
They have an airplane from WW1 in an airshow in Rhinebeck NY. It has two speeds wide open and off. The pilot keeps switching it on and off.
Would that be the DR1 Tri-Plane replica? I remember it from the county fair as a kid, but it wasn't airworthy last I heard. Lots of WWI planes were that way, fixed, one-speed "carburetion". Many also swung the entire crankcase around the crankshaft instead of the normal spinning crank inside the engine. That was because they did not have the metallurgy/lubrication technology required to keep the engine from seizing any other way.
I don't remember, we took our daughter there about 10 years ago. I'm just assuming that they are still flying it. It did spin the crankcase around the shaft.
Ok, I'm confused.... what am I missing? Question about tuning a VW and now talk about airplanes? How did airplanes get brought into this?
You must not be seeing the radial aircraft engine sticking out of the back of the VW beetle in the YouTube link in krooser's first post.
