    Howdy, Strangers!

I went for a walk the other night and came home with a STIHL 025. My neighbor gave it to me because it had a fuel leak and had trouble starting while hot. One of the local STIHL dealers said $300 to fix, so my neighbor bought a new one from them. I don’t trust the shop, FWIW!

Anyway, I quickly discovered it is missing the fuel line vent, which is likely the source of the leak. I ordered that part and it will be an easy fix. The saw still starts, but when it starts the chain runs at darn near full blast when it should be stopped at idle. The chain brake works, fortunately. It definitely scared the hell outta me when I fired it up and kicked off the brake.

I already changed fuel line/filter, spark plug, and air filter. Any good advice?

that sound like an issue with the throttle/quick start choke or an air leak.
Did you blip the throttle while it was running full blast/idle?

Yes. I let the saw run for a while with the brake on. I kicked the brake off and let it run and then I squeezed the throttle trigger and it kicked it up just a little bit more. I was hoping I could run it out and flush the problem, but to no avail!

Id check the fuel, make sure it’s not straight gas. And I’d take a look at the piston, pulling the muffler. Still sound lean...too much air.
Replace the vent and see if that calms things down

Is the throttle starting detent holding the trigger, and not releasing ?

I have a 025 that I hated until I ditched the carb. Stock had a fixed high jet...no adjustment. Replaced with a walboro WT-215. 25 dollars new on Ebay.
Great running saw now along with opening the muffler.

So the plastic piece holding the carburetor adjustments was busted, which led to the idle screw being way too loose (like not even holding on by a thread) I ditch the plastic piece (do I really need it?) and tightened the screw. Saw runs fine now!

My oldest running saw is a 025. Best saw I’ve owned.
