Well, I finally stopped dragging my heels and ordered a new large insert. I thought about a large freestanding stove in the fireplace but had clearance issues both in terms of the fireplace and to combustibles.

The stove should be delivered today after being backordered for a while. I will try to get some detailed pics during the install.

Trying to let fyrebug keep his job. I got an Osburn 2400 which is made by SBI. It was delivered this afternoon. So Sunday we will see how the install goes.

To bad there are no free goodies for members that buy something other than a furnace made by SBI.

I had the sweep in the other day and he gave the chimney a heavy duty sweep ahead of the liner install.

Not looking forward to getting the old Kodiak out of there. The pallet forks for the tractor should come in handy.

Sounds like a plan Forage.....I hope you like your new insert as well as I do mine. I'm sure it will probably cut your wood usage over the old dragon.

Pardon if this a dumb question, but why do freestanding stoves in fireplaces require more clearance than an insert?

It isn't that they require more clearance but they stand taller and/or project farther into the room. I still need an extender pad in front of the new stove.

Got a little bit done yesterday.

    Stove and liner kit.

Took the fire brick out of the old beast to make it easier to move.

Alright, I got some stuff done yesterday even with a bad back. Just took it slow and steady.

Got the old stove out. Pallet forks on a FEL are the bees knees.

    In came the new insert.

Getting ready to get the damper out. Having a good cast iron cutting blade on hand would have been handy.

What was handy is the fact I have a portable gas compressor and an air chisel which made quick work of the bricks I needed to remove in the smoke shelf.

Test fitted the stove. Tight but it fit.

    Prepped the the liner.

Ready to go for this morning. I will be pulling it down the chimney.

Here is what I will be pulling it down.

Wish me luck. My sweep said not to put insulation the first few feet of the liner because it wouldn't make the bends at the bottom with the insulation. There is a room on the other side of the chimney so it emerges from the roof line about 12 feet up the chimney. There are three hookups in this chimney. One for the boiler in the basement that used to be the sealed up fireplace in the room on the other side. One for this fireplace and one for the sealed up fireplace on the second floor. So this flue is the farthest on the right.

    Insert all test fitted together.

I just noticed if you look at the pic up the chimney there looks like a left hand print in the mortar in the lower right center of the photo. The house was built between 1810 and 1815 so that could be a mighty old hand print. Maybe it is just the light.

It is in. I will post up pics this evening. Now for the break in fires. Nip and tuck there for a little while as to wether the liner would bend into the sove without further cutting.

How does the firebox size compare to the old Kodiak?

Supposedly it is 3.2 sq. feet. I measured the Kodiak at 3.8 feet below the smoke shelf. I guess they count above the baffle as well or something because it looks small for 3.2 feet. I loaded the Kodiak north south which was good for throwing heat. I need to get used to east west loading in the new stove. No more slammer install so that is great. I know it leaked a lot there was a bunch of brick dust on top of the chimney the draft is so strong on that thing it pulled it up and deposited it around the top. No baffle but I rock wooled the damper area.

Going from an Pre-EPA to a modern stove is always interesting.
    • I wonder how much heat was going up the chimney on the old stove.
    • Did the old stove have a blower?
    • How many cords of wood did you go through on the old stove.
    • How long of a burn did the Kodiak give you?
